FS7: Do Canon lenses work properly with the Metabones adapters on the FS7?

I have an opportunity to get a good deal on a Sony FS7 (with Metabones IV EF > E adapter), so I have been considering making the purchase. However, I'm 100% invested in Canon glass, so I am only interested in buying the FS7 if my Canon lenses will work properly with the camera with the Metabones Mark IV EF > E adapter. I have read endless threads about iris not working, IS not working, having to take off the adapter to change lenses, etc.

Has all of this been resolved with the new Sony and Metabones firmware updates? I don't care too much about auto focus, but I do expect the iris changes to be smooth and quick, and for the IS to function properly. All of my lenses are Canon brand (not Sigma or Tamron), not sure if this makes a difference.

Will I regret my purchase if I plan to use my Canon glass without problems? I do a lot of run & gun work so I need to move quick on my shoots. Buying Sony or any other lenses is not an option for me.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

IS and iris changes will work fine . AF and auto Iris are more dependent on the lens and the firmware of the metabones. However you won't get any smoother iris changes than you can get with a Canon lens - they will be steppy.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I realize that the iris changes will be stepped, but I just want to make sure I will be able to change the iris quickly. I read early reports of very slow iris changes and white flashes when changing iris.

So that shown here with the Sigma 18-35mm (starting about 3:45) is gone?

Well, he DID say "green mode".

Thats the stills mode. Change it to Advanced.

Here you go.

Edit: He changes to advanced mode afterwards, and the flickering is gone :-)

Why that particular lens doesnt go above f/6.3 i have no idea, i dont own it. But Sigma 24-105, 35, and 50 Art works perfect. I have zero issues.

That seems to be a very old and outdated source. In the meantime Metabones had firmware updates and thy changed a lot. My question was more if the flashing with t Simga shown aboe is gone with the firmware updates.

It still works exactly as described. So age has no meaning here.

The white flashes went away in the video as well when changing the adapter mode to video, as it should be.

The latest firmware i believe even starts the adapter in advanced mode from factory, so hopefully less confusion will arise.

Sorry, but this is misinformation; the current status is:

- the default is now Green mode
- IS works perfectly in BOTH modes
- in Green mode, only Push AF works apart IS; no Push AI, no continuous AI or AF
- in Advanced mode: Push AF works but less reliably (especially at full tele); continuous AF works fine, continuous AI - while not flashing indeed - is very loud and hunts like crazy

So, the only mode for video with FS7 is the (default) Green mode, with both IS and Push AF working fine. I've asked Metabones to also incorporate Push AI in the green mode - when they do, we will be fine.

Ok, sorry then. I was just quoting your very post in this thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?347963-New-major-Release-for-Metabones-adapters

Yes - it DOES work! We now have:

- continuous AF (push AF functional, but still not 100% successful at full tele)
- continuous AI (almost no hunting)
- both available by default (as Advanced mode is now the default)

Good work, Metabones!

Edit:

Lol, you could have just said there was a new firmware just 1 silly week later changing back the Advanced mode ;-) Instead of saying i was spreading misinformation. Didnt know they updated almost exclusively to change the operating mode.

  • You have spoken and we have listened. "Green" is the default mode again.

I am still on firmware 23. june and i have to change to advanced mode to get OSS to work with my Sigma lenses on FS7. Have sold almost all Canon so cant tell about those.

Should I know you were basing on my original post, I would just say there was another fw release shortly after :)
PEACE

Thank you for this good description. So that still does not sound too good for me.
