Do 4:3 with the HMC150

I'm trying to do 4:3 SD with the HMC150. After shooting I try to convert the video in several ways, but always stays with black stripe on the top and bottom of the video. Any other alternative manual makes the video get stretched (squeeze). Is there a way to do this to be normal at 4:3?
Thanks

Are you trying to take the footage out of the RCA cable from the camera? If so there's a setting in the menu to choose between squeeze, crop, and letterbox. If you're doing it on a computer there's all kinds of ways, which depend on what programs you're using.

I convert HD footage shot with my HMC-150 down to 4:3 SD format all the time using my Sony Vegas Pro editor, though I am sure it would work with the consumer Sony NLE editors too.

I could explain my process, but if you are not using Sony Vegas it might not be much use to you.

I use Edius 5 and every form of conversion that use, or even opening a project in 4:3 always appears the black bands above and below. Never is that the screen are totally satisfied
Can you help me?

I don't use Edius, but the principles are likely to be the same.

First, verify that the sequence you are editing is really on a 4x3 setting. If not, change it to a 4x3 setting.

When you import footage and place it on a sequence that is a different aspect ratio most NLEs will auto-resize your footage so that it fits within the current settings. The only way to do this with 16x9 footage is to shrink it to fit side to side, which leaves black bars on the top and bottom.

To fix this simply zoom in to your footage so that it fits the sequence vertically, losing the left and right edges. You should also now be able to 'pan and scan' the 16x9 footage so that the most interesting 4x3 view of the 16x9 footage is visible at any given time.

Try posting a list of steps you are taking - then perhaps some one can point out where you are going wrong. Simply saying it doesn't work doesn't give people much to go on...

Using Sony Vegas:

1- Open a new timeline set to: HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080, 29.970 fps)
( assuming that you are editing 1080P footage shot at 60i )

2- In the "Project Properites" dialog box, change the "Pixel Aspect Ratio" from 1.3333 (HDV 1080) to 1.0000 (Square).

3- Import your 1080P 60i video and drop it on the Vegas timeline.

4- Click the "Event Pan/Crop" button at the end of the video clip, and the "Event Pan/Crop" dialog box opens up.

5- In the "Position : Width" field type in 1440 and close the "Event Pan/Crop" dialog box, and your movie will now be cropped to 4:3 perspective. No black bars or frames.

You can open the "Event Pan/Crop" dialog box to adjust the crop, if you want to crop in tighter or to crop more to the left or right or top or bottom of the frame.

Edit your video as normal, and export to the format that you want to deliver your final video in.

*** Sorry when I wrote 1080P, I meant 1920x1080 60i ( 16:9 ) format, that you are cropping down to 1440x1080 for (4:3) format.

PAULO, put very simply, the only ways to make 16:9 footage into 4:3 without black bars is to crop it or squeeze it.

If you crop it, you will lose part of your image, it is up to you to decide which part of the image get's left out.

If you squeeze it the image will be distorted.

Other than that you have to live with black bars if you want your entire 16:9 image to be viewed on a 4:3 screen.

As for how to do it, that depends on your NLE software, and it is probably time to break out the manual. This is a very common operation so it should not be hard to find.

Ok, I'll do some procedures and fails to comment back to you. Some clients need the 4x3, I'll make some submissions and gives a problem I describe here for you
Thanks
