DNxHD vs. Pro Res HQ

>What are the differences?

One is made by Avid. The other by Apple.

> Which is the best?

For what? Editing in Avid? DNxHD. Editing in FCP? ProRes.

Shane is right.

Visually both codecs are so close that it's redundant to claim one superior. But if you really want to know according to tech tests - DNxHD has the edge over all ProRes422 versions. However... ProRes4444 variation trumps them all, since (as far as I know) DNxHD does not have a 4:4:4 option.

/my official armchair expert opinion

concerning DNxHD-
can someone please tell me a good wotkflow for AVCHD MTS?
i think my best route is:
log original files and rename them for proper identification.
duplicate renamed original files on a separate drive.
import all MTS files to Avid for offline editing in DNxHD 36.

ok, here i get stuck. what do i do next after finishing offline?
how do i transfer the final sequence to be on-lined? probably export AAF to After Effects.
but what's the best online worklfow from your experience?

thanks

If you import them at DNxHD36 then lock your edit, just delete the DNxHD 36 media and batch import the clips but at a higher resolution. It will relink to your sequence if you batch import. Then export AAF to AE.

Regarding DNxHD vs. ProRes - what Shane said. ProRes is Apple's DNxHD.

but if I go to AE for online, why would I need to bother
Importing to avid again? why can't I deal with the
Original files in AE?

OFFLINE:
- Import everything at DNxHD36.
- do an awesome edit

ONLINE:
1. duplicate your seq, put it in a new bin called COOLEDIT_V22REV_ONLINE or whatever
2. select your sequence, do BIN-> DECOMPOSE, uncheck OFFLINE MEDIA ONLY, check IMPORTED CLIPS and DIGITIZED CLIPS. Now your bin will be filled with clips.
3. select all and Batch Import at DNxHD175 or whatever.

Now you have your finished edit looking great. But you haven't used that much disk space.

EG you re-imported only the footage that you used at DNxHD175.

Now you can send shots to After Effects or whatever you need.

Better, when decomposing, you can add handles so you can still adjust your edit at this stage.
