DNxHD premiere sequence?

I started with acvhd, and exported from after effects as DNxHD, when i go to import into premiere cs4 there is no preset option to create a sequence, with the right specifications, and when i go to make my own there is no option for DNxHD. I'm on windows vista 32 bit. any suggestions?

So long as you match the resolution, frame rate, field order (if any) and Pixel Aspect Ratio, you're good. You can do those manually in Desktop mode.

First, the presets have limited use. They are just there to make things easier for new people. Basically, what you can do is:

1. Start your project and choose any random preset
2. Delete the sequence that PP created
3. Import your media
4. Click and drag your desired media file to the "new sequence" button. A new sequence will automatically be created with the exact characteristics of your clip (frame rate, resolution, audio, etc etc).

Again, the preset only determines that characteristics of your first sequence...just remove the default sequence in there and create your own based on your media.

4. Click and drag your desired media file to the "new sequence" button.
That feature was added with CS5, which requires a 64 bit OS. The OP is using Vista 32 bit, which means he's using CS4 or earlier. He'll have to create the sequence manually as I described.

May I ask why you're going from AE to PP?

I would guess because playing AVCHD directly in Premiere is halting at best, for a large number of machines other than those of recent vintage and have video interfaces that supports Adobe's use of CUDA features.

So the OP is perhaps using AE as a transcoding engine to produce media in a more usable codec for editing.

AME would do that job a lot more efficiently.

Coming out of After Effects, I assume one would have media with, you guessed it, "effects" that needs to be added to a program in Premiere Pro.

It's backwards, in my opinion.

Firstly, Mpeg Streamclip should be used to transcode to DNxHD. Secondly, a final render should come from AE, which means that any comps with effects created in AE can wait in AE, to be placed in the final comp.

I was never able to trust DL enough due to its issues. Better to do what you want in PP (hard cuts mostly) and import that project in AE for a no-hassle workflow.

In some workflows or targets that might not be an ideal workflow. AE is limited to 1pass encodes. Even Adobe reps recommend exporting a lossless format with AE, and then using another encoder for final encode

Also, Mpegstreamclip on windows is a different beast than on a Mac. It usually won't accept AVCHD .

I agree that rendering lossless such as Animation from AE to provide an encoder such as Squeeze the opportunity to output compressed files is best. In fact there are many programs better at compression than AE. But that doesn't change the order of PP to AE. :)
