GH4 dLOG (a vLOG replacement... somehow)

Since there's still no ETA or even confirmation we'll ever receive the vLOG update, I've started working on a CineLikeD (highest dynamic range, up to 13 steps (usable 11-12), but ugly color science) to LOG LUT.
This includes many color transformations (biggest difference are skintones, reds and greens) as well as contrast.

Starting point is CinelikeD but without any flat settings to keep all the midtone detail (skintones, leaves etc..), lower noise and keep banding low.

This LUT adds compability to a whole universe of LOG to REC709 LUT files, many of them are for free!
dLOG is available for free as well, download here (version 1.4):

To achieve best results, use the following settings in camera:
Cinelike D
Contrast 0 (use iDynamic low for high contrast situations if needed or higher contrast values for low contrast scenarios)
Sharpness -5
Noise Reduction -5 (using no sharpness nor noise reduction this camera produces very fine grain which helps dithering the footage :))
Saturation -2 (above, red channel clips quite easily)
Hue 0
No iDyn/iRes/Shadow/Highlight/MP
0-255
Make sure to avoid overexposure if possible. Use the histogram!

Add this LUT first, then add a layer with color correction/curves etc., then add a LUT of your choice. ;)

Looks very good...I am really surprised that no one has replied yet.
I agree about the colors, I rarely use Cine-D because of the skin tones, I much prefer Natural or Portrait.
Can you be more specific about how you would use this LUT...so would it be (In Premiere terms) main clip in the Timeline.
then this LUT on the highest adjustment layer, then below that color curves on another adj layer, then below that another LUT adj layer(if you need it)...then below that would be the clip...is that what you mean?
I'll be interested to do some tests. gotta shoot some music vids soon and I was set up to do it natural, but if this comes off I may change my mind.
Is this the only LUT you used on the clips above...what else was used?
So any other tips about using it in post would be great! BTW Some impressive clips on your site

Slightly off topic...I may have to cut some GH4 with 2.5 BMCC footage soon, I see you use one, do they work together OK?
I know the BMCC is slightly more cinematic and the GH4 is more detailed..I am hoping I can match them OK in post.
Cheers

cool I'm going to give it a try. The Medgyesi settings are too contrast-i for the South California Beach days (at least that's what my producer thinks....filming hipster surf lifestyle stuff )

This is interesting. I don't know how much use it has outside of being paired with LUTs that require a Log base to start with, but still a fun experiment.

I guess if you're used to working with log or RAW footage (like Black Magic Cameras) that this will give you a more comfortable starting point. Looks pretty good to me!

Don't really see a need for this. It adds another step in the post workflow that degrades the image a bit more. If this was done in camera before the compression then it would make sense...

After seeing some of the results using v-log I still think there's a need for this :D

Looks nice, reminds me of the look the "Supertone" profile gets you (Portrait with some modifications). Have you used that setting and notice any difference between using your method vs. that profile or another profile that gets it closer to the starting point in camera?
