DJI Phantom 2+ Question

Understanding that this is a kit complete with a 1080 cam on a gimbal, can the oem cam be removed and replaced with something like a GoPro? Say you wanted to go with an upgraded cam in the future, or there was a oem cam failure, what would an upgrade path look like?

TIA

I think you mean the Phantom Vision 2+. If you're going to go down the GoPro route then you'd want the Phantom 2. Also DJI is going to launch the Triumph hexacopter soon (this is a parallel line to the Phantom) so you may want to wait until after that. Also be warned DJI released firmware 3.6 in the last week or so and already users are reporting problems including Phantoms falling from the sky and various battery issues.

Grant:

Stay with the Phantom 2, not the Vision Series.

You can purchase a turn key solution, minus GoPro, for about $800.00 including gimbal. GoPro Hero 3+ BE is running $349.00 at Costco of late.

@P13: Where have you seen these issue reported? PhantomPilots has and extensive thread, and I don't see anything there.

Hey P13, David, et al,

Yes I am going to wait until the DJI announcement before doing anything.

DJI has certainly received a lot of criticism for buggy software, and that is pretty scary when combined with rotating machinery which can fall from the sky. Yet that group does seem to be in a very vocal minority. If I go forward with this, I would certainly be starting slow, very slow.

There are so many kit choices that I get a little glazed over. Would this be the model and gimbal you are suggesting:

So does the Phantom 2 with gimbal + GoPro offer the same or equivalent camera-copter integration that the Phantom 2 Vision+ ? Although the GoPro does offer better resolution, it seemed like the all DJI copter + camera integration with iOS device was worked out a bit better. That is a qualitative statement only.

Thanks, Grant

The BHPhotoVideo product link is the one I was recommending.

As to your second question, you have to determine whether good video or iOS integration is more important. None of the current integrated DJI cameras produce the same quality that a GoPro 3, or the GoPro 4 produce.

Neither does DJI offer any 1080/60p alternatives, much less 2.7K or 4K/30p footage.

This may change with the rumored Triumph or Inspire release, but information and release date are sketchy on that product.

David, there a few posts on DJI's own forum and there's been numerous incidents reported on the various Phantom Facebook groups in the last week. The trouble is as there's no telemetry as standard it's impossible to know how many issues are down to the new firmware or how many would have occurred anyway.

Battery issues seem to be the biggest problem bugging users. But I've seen posts on unbricking gimbals and falling Phantoms including with legit DJI batteries, but I frequent Arducopter forums most so I've only glanced over the problems.

Here DJI seems to be getting its versions confused again bricking people's gimbals this time, albeit I'm sure there's a fix:
