DJI Mini 3 PRO

Finally some action back in here :)

I must say I'm tempted to get this as a drone for situations where it's too complicated to get the Inspire in the air. It maybe would replace the Mavic Pro 2. What I didn't find out so far:

- is the 48MP photo a single shot or a multi shot?
- is the aperture fixed at f 1.7?
- is the 4K 2x zoom a sensor crop with 1:1 pixel or is it a digital interpolation?

How do we suspect the image quality would compare to the Mavic 3 Pro? I do a lot of international travel and I suspect this would be far superior for travel, but my concern would be too substantial a drop in image quality.

1st find:
- aperture is fixed. Bring NDs and play with ISO
- it's a digital zoom.

For me the magic is gone. 24mm isn't an option for what I do.

5 minutes of reading through specs attempting to get clarification on the actual recording format and bit-depth, and the bit-depth is literally not listed anywhere (had to go to an external review to clarify it). Why do companies always feel the need to hide/obfusticate this stuff? It drives me mental.

It's 8-bit only.

Finally some action back in here :) ...

There seem to be more new products coming out either for the summer or the late summer/ fall. Canon is about to PR their new entry level APS-C cameras. Not something most pro-users might be interested in but signs of life nonetheless.

According to sonyalpharumors.com, the semiconductor shortage is expected to ease later this year and therefore Sony plans to launch the a7riv in autumn

Sony published the latest 2021 financial report. While sales numbers were good Sony said that there was a decrease in camera unit sales: In Q4 they sold around 7% less units compared to Q4 2020.

Blame the worldwide chip shortage for that. It’s that bad that PS5 sales numbers are down too. In Q4 they sold 2 million units compared to the 3.3 million units in the year before. If they cannot produce enough of the highly profitable PS5 they surely can’t afford to produce enough Alpha cameras.

The good news is that Sony expects things to improve during the year due to better parts supply. This is also the reason the A7rIV will be on market in autumn and not in summer. In autumn the semiconductor production shortage is expected to ease considerably making it easier for Sony to launch new cameras.

(Am I interested in an a7riv and whatever higher res video options it offers? Honestly, I'll just wait until my clients start requesting 6k or 8k and then buy the latest and greatest. No need to rush that move)

FWIW, Lockheed says they can't crank up the production of the Javelin missile from 2,100 to 4,500 due to a similar chip shortage situation. The launch tube and the missile are each priced at about $250,000, having about 250 microprocessors per unit.

I know you're a war/history buff...would they ever go back to basics for something like that, if necessary? How they made them half a century or what not ago? Seems like it sometimes doesn't need to travel far.

The Germans and the Swedes still make "manual" anti-tank launching tubes, although their latest missiles have chips with independent guidance. One would think that, given the modern tech, it's not that difficult. Meaning that, since any decent modern camera - Panasonic aside ... I kid, I kid - can auto focus on a given subject almost instantly, one just needs to add a telephoto lens and a small computer for the missile pathway.

I have the Phantom 3 Pro from forever ago - been looking at the Mavic 3 but this might be more in line with my needs both in cost and performance requirements.

How does this stack up visual quality wise compared to the Phantom 3 Pro?

To be fair, the 8-bit doesn't look to bad for such a low bit rate camera. It's not for me, but I can see a lot of news teams sticking one of these in the bag.

the bitrate is 150mbs which is higher than the Mavic 2 pro (100mbs) and similar to the H265 140mbs of the Mavic 3 pro. They both are supposed to have 10bit. I’m not sure if that is only 8bit? He states it in the video though.

the big advantage is 249g which is under the limit of lots of legal limitations at least here in Germany

I feel like I don't want to shoot LOG in 8-bit. But sure, to shoot it with contrast and saturation I would have no objections

The new Sony Xperia1 IV smartphone has what Sony claims is the "first optical zoom". It also has a 16mm and 24mm lenses, which digitally upsize/upres. 16mm works up to 24mm, which makes sense. The 24mm works up to 85mm, which makes less sense. Nonetheless, that's what Sony engineers have come up with. The 85mm-125mm is optical. The resolution is on the low end, @12 MPX but it also has 4K 120.

It's a pricey bugger though @ $1,600.

Oh and Fuji is about to announce their two new APS-C models - one with 26 MPX and 6K video; the other with 40 and 8K. The same body, no prices or the full set of features yet.

That explains why it looked so good for 8 bit!
