DJ Tour Video

Hi everyone,
Just finished shooting (solo) a DJ tour video a few months ago and thought I'd share some of the screen grabs. I used to be a hard core Canon user (GL1 and XL1) and just started using the DVX for this project. It's a great camera!
I had some problems dealing with red/blue gelled stage lights in some cities...had some color bleeding..but I know for a fact that it would've looked worse on the Canons. The low lighting would've killed me.

Anyways, I'm really inspired to shoot some narrative shorts after seeing the cool projects going on in here.
Hopefully, I'll get to show more projects by Jan/Feb 2005.

They guy I was shooting is a Skratch DJ named DJ Qbert. The turntable you see is called the QFO.

I'll see if I could throw a trailer up by early January.

Re: DJ Tour Video

Hey eignacio! Great stuff, I really like the last one, awesome :D, keep it UP!!

Re: DJ Tour Video

Looks great, as previous have said... Amazing what the DVX can do under any amount of lighting.

Re: DJ Tour Video

Beautiful stuff - I actually love the 'flood' of blue/purple/pinkish lighting in the 3rd one! :)

Re: DJ Tour Video

This was a "run and gun" tour shoot. It was pretty wild and crazy. A few times, we'd have back to back to back shows where we'd fly and arrive right the show without any sound check (and I would be clueless on what the stage/club lighting would be). Whew! A lot of hard work and improvising, but it was great.

Some of the screen grabs were taken as the lights blinked on for a second (the sydney one..bluish gelled lights on the dj). It was mainly dark with lights flashing all over the place.

I shot it on 24p and back then....I didn't know much about the 24pa setting- I wish I did though.

After seeing disjecta's film A Magical Fall, I plan to do more experiments with the 24pa settings...that was a great visual montage.

Re: DJ Tour Video

Perhaps I have chosen the wrong day job. I wish I could scratch well enough to fill venues like QBert...

Nice grabs, thanks

Re: DJ Tour Video

Eignacio,

Yo I think I met you in Hong Kong. This past summer, prolly around July 11/12. I was there doing some bboy performances. I had met QBert when he came to Vancouver to do a show, but I'm also good friends with Adi. Myself and my friend were just walking around the streets and he's like.."Hey there's Qbert ...and there's Adi!!!".

You guys were filming for Turntable TV, and we did a sound bite for you. You guys wanted us to break, but we were hella sore and outta it. The first thing I noticed (besides realising I knew some people on a random street corner in Asia) was that you were filming with a DVX.

Anyways, that was a long story for a coincidence. But I'm guessing it musta been you. Anyways man, I'd like to see more, I can show you some of my ish too.

Peace!
Colione.

Re: DJ Tour Video

Colione,
Wow, small world! Yeah, that was me. ha,ha.
We were walking around and heard someone yell "Adi!". Q, Ritche, and I were saying..."dang, this girl is popular". I think you were the 3rd person that recognized her.

How'd the World Dance Exhibition go? Are you in the same group as Adi? Sounded like a cool thing to have checked out.

Did you also bring your camera at the event and shoot anything? I saw a link to your site from your previous postings. The thing is that I'm at my Parents place for the Thanksgiving holiday and they've only got 56k internet access...it'll take forever to download video. I'll be back home around monday so I'll be sure to check them out.

I'll try to finish up a trailer of the tour by mid-December (depending on the other video deadlines). Whew!

I'm going to experiment a bit more early January when things slow down on my side. Keep me posted on any new vids on your end. Would love to check them out.

Re: DJ Tour Video

Eignacio,

Crazy! Yeah, Adi's a popular girl! ;)

The dance performances went great! Asia rarely gets to see western dance. It was cool we were like rock stars, girls would be waiting for us at the stage enterance after the shows, for pictures and stuff.
Adi was actually supposed to perform with us, she came to some rehersals, but she was in asia for a family thing right, and her parents didn't want her spending all of the time with us.
I never brought my camera (though I would of loved to). We backpacked Thailand afterwards, and lugging around my newly purchases DVX and worrying about it wasn't what I wanted to do.

I'd like to see some of the footage you have as well. I got a questions ... do you know Jivan Ivan? I was down in LA recently at this Red Bull Beat Riders, talking about films and showing him my stuff, and he told me he did a short film with Q. He said it was horrible and would never show me, but I wanna see it, or at least know about it so I can tease him. Do you know of it?

Anyways, I'd like to chat with ya and send you some stuff ... hit me up on msn @ Cole043@hotmail.com

Peace!
