Currently filming a documentary about certain circles of DJ's in Osaka, Japan.

I'll get some stills up later tonight but i'm curious if people have any good resources on documentary styles or tips for equipment etc, no budget to speak of all shooting done with a DVX100b. Just ordered a VIDLED and RODE NTG-1 shotgun.

Also have a decent tripod and the steadystick. Any other equipment or general tips are very much welcome.

EDIT:

Heres some early grabs, haven't got my onboard light yet so i'm doing what i can without.

Seems like you got all the equipment you need. Just make sure though, that you get the sound real good. I bought the latest Q-Bert vid (Live in Austrailia & Asia) and video is so so but what was worse was that most if not all the audio was captured with what sounded like the built-in mic. Stereo separation is what made it obvious. I know I know, probably a run and gun moment here and there, but for the whole thing? I think video like that could have benefitted from better sound especially on a subject like that.

So with that said, it might be a really good idea to get yourself a long mic cable and get a line out straight from the DJ mixer (if there isn't a soundman running a board that the DJ is plugged into) or better yet! get a decent Wireless system (like this) and plug the transmitter into the mixer and the receiver into the DVX Channel 2 and use Channel 1 to capture a little ambient sound or hook up that shotgun to that Channel.

Scratch is a great doc. A similar one was Breath Control: The History of the Human Beatbox. DJ Shadow's In Tune & On Time DVD is great too, my only complaint of that video is that there wasn't enough cut aways to the visuals, which were great too! Make sure when you are shooting the show, if there are visuals, see if you can hook into the VJ's mixer and record a bit of that to throw into the mix. Other stuffs: Pedal or any films or photos by Peter Sutherland. Any of the Lords of the Floor. **** you probably know all that stuff. Oh! Another doc where I remember seeing gear used was Rize.

Good luck on your project! Let us know when its done!

thanks for the comments, i'm gonna look up some of those titles you've mentioned. Seen a few but certainly not all of em. Its harder to find certain flicks in Japan though. Amazon.com is a lifesaver sometimes.
