Hi everybody,
here is my homemade steadicam, based on the Merlin model (not so small, light and well designed :-P )

A little explanation can be seen here here

Tell me what you think of it and what can be ameliorated from your experience in DIY's life (except my training!)

Love the bit where you go down the slide!

Looks like the unit is working. You need some practice operating of course - the footage is definitely like being in a boat - rocking left & right - but stabilized it is. Well done!

Approximatively 65 euros (97$/60£), some pieces were already in my garage for years, difficult to estimate their real price.

dam im so jealousy

Sorry about my english technical vocabulary, may be the translation from french I tried don't get the right words :-S

Yes JonE5 it is the kind of universal you can find in socket wrench, but I didn't get mine from that.
About the ball bearing, it's a "3 part thing"

Excuser mon français pauvre. Vous avez fait un travail spectaculaire sur ceci. Beau !

Merci ;)

Thank you DJDecay for answering ;)

Thank everybody

Here are another tests with the final design, new weights, less rocking left & right (it seems? :) )

That last shot was easily my favourite, very smooth motion through the door. What exactly did you change in the end? Seems to have made a difference (though that might be practice coming into play too :P )

It's just slow motion 50% + 10% slowed down at the end with Twixtor on After Effects ;)

Very impressed. Your control improved a lot from 1st to 2nd video. Great job!

Thank you!
I Promise: here are the last steadicam tests shots I'll post on this forum.
They've been taken in a really windy day, some clips have to be re-steady in post production you can easily find wich:

3d research pictures have been posted on my blog too.

PS: I really hate wind now :-D

Nice. I'm not using a gimbal on mine. (Mine folds and looks a bit like a steadicam junior and can also extend and be used like a hand held crane).

I had a DIY steadycam years a go but it was "borrowed" and never returned. Alas.. I have built a new one. I need to add some weighting to get rid of rotational influences.

Been playing with the idea of adding a gimbal but have not sorted out parts for one yet.

lol,
I'm glad you like my steadi so much you want buy one!
Unfortunately I'm not the only person involved in the building of this toy and it's a not so small object, I'll put pictures of me in action with it this week end on my blog, you'll be able to judge the Merlin or Hague system are much better designed + you should have them (Hague) for approximately the same price I should buy mine.

Luis, I love your DIY Crane!
