Just finished up a mod on a cheap softbox umbrella with standard e27 base to accept a gy9,5 bulb. It actually works like a charm and this fixture takes no time to setup on set. If anyone wants to know more about this project I'll be happy to elaborate.
Yeah, I also scanned the web for an adapter but my guess is that the e27 is rated max 400w ( correct my if im wrong ) while gy9,5 is rated much more, so I had to replace the whole e27 base with the gy9,5.
My light has two aluminium shafts that has a aluminium round base that is mounted on the part of the umbrella that slide over the umbrella basepart. Kinda hard to explain, but you see the one of the shafts and the round alu base in the first picture. I also heat treated the fabric with a flame deterrent. When rigging the light you just pull the second shaft out of the base, opening the umbrella up, until it clicks into place.
Right now i'm in the works of making a fabric grid, and I realized I had to make a supportframe because the the umbrella had some issue holding the weight of the grid. You could use a lighter fabric but I could'nt find a fabric that was light enough and still block light.
I've used Rifas before so I know what you mean, and this mod sounds great. The one other question I would have is what chemical did you use to protect against the higher heat levels....Pro Rifas can be hella expensive and if I can piece on together for around $50 I'll be super excited
Well, here in Sweden I found a spraybottled flame deterrent in a local hardware store, don't know where you can get it in the US. Maybe someone else can chime in here.
Which ballast and bulb are you using? I built a similar light with a metal hallide bulb, electronic ballast and a cheap soft-box. It works but having no hot-restrike is a bit of a pain. The ballast is heavy, and takes ~ 5 minutes to warm up to a consistent color temp. The softbox is not as fast to set up as a Rifa.
I just bought one of those umbrella soft boxes http://cgi.ebay.com/SOFTBOX-UMBRELLA...87553325197374
and it's tiny. It's about 18" square, which looks MUCH smaller than the one you used.
Can you tell use where you got your umbrella?
