DIY Power Box - AntonBauer, IDX, whatever

I wanted to use my older AB Dionic batteries (the ones that don't power the HPX500 very long any more) to power stuff that hangs on the AF100; LED light, wireless rcvr, TVLogic monitor, etc. AB's "multitap" plug, that breaks out four Dtap connectors, is $80 alone! Each Dtap connector, another $26! And there' still the question of how to mount the battery to the camera rig.

I wanted something cheaper AND more flexible. So I used an AB Goldplate mount off a (very) old camera, and mounted it to a plastic project box ($5). Put a couple bus bars ($5) inside the box, and surface mounted a few 2.5mm coaxial power sockets ($2 ea.). Still plenty of room to add whatever power sockets I might need in the future - Hirose, 4pin XLR, whatever.

In the process of ordering a rail system now (probably Berkey Systems), so no pics of it in use, but my plan is to have a large Velcro pad on the back of the box, and simply stick it onto a flat bit of velcro'd metal that's attacked via a bracket to the rails.

here's some pics, there's some unwired 2.5mm power plugs for scale reference:

Very nice. Functional and looks nice as well.

With all that money you saved by not going AB stock items you can fill that coffee mug up with Starbucks!

lol.... just saying.... $230 vs about $20. Of course, theirs has all kinds of taps on it I have no need for so.... still happy! (7v, 5v, USB?)

And thank you! ;)

here's the parts
the box:
1 General Purpose Black Chassis Box, 4.8" x 3.7" x 1.2" $4.79
seems most of my "support" gear likes 2.5mm plugs, so I bought a bunch to make custom lengths:
8 DC Plug (9.3mm Long), 2.5MM x 5.5MM, Inline, Plastic Housing $1.29
4 DC Plug, 2.5MM x 5.5MM Right Angle, Inline, Plastic Housing $1.59
5 DC Jack, 2.5MM x 5.5MM, Panel Mount, Metal Housing $2.79
these are the Molex connectors:
1 Multi-Pin Connector: 0.062" 2 Circuit Free Hanging Socket $1.29
1 Multi-Pin Connector: 0.062" 2 Circuit Free Hanging Plugs $1.29

the bus bars I got at a local supply house, Willys didn't carry

to attach the Goldplate, use 4-40x3/4 round head bolt w/ lock washer

Really like these 2.5mm plugs - never found ones that fit as snug as these do. If you're doing the Goldplate, you'll need to shave off some off the plate corners in order to have access to the screw holes for the box. Also need to cut off the tip of the battery release. None of this affects anything. Just epoxied bus bars down. Went with bars so it''d be easier to add sockets in the future.

Hey--know this is a few years late but just had one question--how important is a fuse in this kind of circuitry? I'm powering an AC7 which can take spikes of up to 18v.

The current capacity is modest and if there is a short, all that happens is the wire melts (and perhaps fuses open if the gauge is small enough). Of course, if the operator's body is touching the wire, they could get severely burned.

But the short would most likely happen when things are first connected. So I think it is a modest risk.
