So Digital Juice has now added a flexible track & wheel system to their Orbit Dolly. The demo looks interesting, but while the track & wheel system is $500 (plus more if you need an extension), the Orbit Dolly is $1500 (at a discount, normally they claim $2500). That's a bit rich for my blood. I do quite a bit of tinkering, so I started thinking - what would be involved in making a DIY Orbit Dolly?
Has anyone used DJ's Orbit Dolly? Just looking at something on a web video, can often be deceptive and things are often much more complicated once you try to duplicate the item, but sometimes it's not. I wonder if you could come up with an Orbit Dolly equivalent for less than $1500... and it would have to be substantially less, otherwise what with the labor involved, it may not make much sense (maybe, like $500 in materials cost?). So what do you guys think of it as a possible DIY project... assuming anybody thinks something like an Orbit Dolly is even worth having - personally I found the addition of the flex track & wheel system to really elevate the usefulness proposition of this dolly (IMHO).
Feedback?
