DIY motor dolly , slider

I hope you get lots of orders and stay in business (so I can order one in the future) because this is exactly what I was craving the other day when I filmed some time lapse.

I think I said out loud, "I wish there was a programmable slider."

Then I found videos like these on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/14352658

Are you already a member of the vimeo community, "We are all made of stars"??? You'll sell a few to the members of that group. That's for sure.

Glideman: The effect is great but lose the interlacing.

Hello!

I'm building a low cost motorized "slider." I will be using a small DSLR (Panasonic GH-1). I have a surplus metal place near me. They sell all kinds of rods and extrusions for $2.10 a LB. I saw some nice extrusion today, Maybe 8 feet. Doesn't weigh much.

I'm stuck on two areas:

1) I need a supplier for the pulley and timing belt. Any suggestions?

2) My second desire is to be able to use it as a slight crane. So I need a motor, DC or stepper to handle that. In my somewhat limited research of these DIY dollys, I haven't come across any ballparks I can use in selecting a motor. So I would appreciate perhaps a starting point, as to Torque in I'd need, What is a good RPM range? Should I look at the amperage to judge its usefulness?

I have experience with the Arduino, so I don't think it will be hard to get the motor running.

Thanks

will post back pictures when it is complete!

Hahaha, I just thought of something. What if you could stick a motorized slider on the end of a crane. Could you create some sort of effect such as the Hitchcock zoom, or some trippy "feeling" effect where the geometry is slightly off and you get a sense of it but can't tell why exactly.
