DIY Mattebox with flag and side wings

Any chance of making these for those of use who are DIY challenged or hate DIY?

Hi y'all!

Just moved in to big ol' Texas!
I'm checkin the nearby home depots and walmarts for local stuff to be able to make it easy to source parts for our DIYs!
Stay tuned.

;-)

Heres some detailed pics on a new version DIY rail block/clamp.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ted

I'm so impressed with the rails, follow focus and mattebox combo you've made! They look really professional!

I've already made a DIY loupe out of some low grade binoculars from Poundland and a Johnson's baby powder tub. Now I'd like to have a go at making the setup you have using your instructions. I was going to start with the rails but the instructions picture is a bit low resolution. Do you have a bigger picture?

How do you make the baseplate to attach the camera to and how is it attached to the rails?

Is the tubing for the rails steel or aluminium?

Sorry for asking too many questions.

Thanks very much!

Stuart

Matte box

Matte box

Hey , what would you charge me to make it and send it to me?

I found out how hard it is to pack the mattebox if the top flag is 19 inch wide so i made a retractable one. similar to the side flags but at both ends. I riveted the swivel and held it in place with the same type of locking method with the side flags.

If someone wants to trace the flag pattern just say so and I'll export a jpg and post it.

I think that part of the joy of DIY is doing the work yourself. It's not that you have to do everything that Teddy made on here, mod it to fit your needs or if you can't find a part make it yourself.

I am in senegal west africa where a store to buy gear is unexistent and there is a lots of sun when you shoot outside you need an nd filter.
THE WAY YOU DID THE MATTEBOX IS AWSOME THANK YOU

I've done a *similar* thing to make a petal style lens hood for the wide angle lens on my HDR-FX1. The paint is drying, so once it's all finished I'll post a pic.

Here's my attempt at a lens hood. Cut from a round plastic food container (it's slightly tapered so it gets tighter as you push it on), and painted with Krylon Fusion plastic paint in matt black.
That stuff is *expensive* here in Australia, cost me about $45 for a can, but is really the only stuff to paint on difficult plastics (this hood is made from polypropylene).

I just cut the bottom of the container off, stuck it on the lens and hooked the camera to the TV. When I traced around the container, so I was effectively tracing the edge of the TV screen, I came up with the shape seen.
Then I cut it out with a Dremel, and smoothed it all off with a linisher, file and sandpaper, just a bit smaller than the line so it was sure not to appear in shot.
All that was left was a quick sand all over, a wipe down with isopropyl alcohol, and paint.

All that's needed now is a marker on the hood and the lens so I can line it up perfectly every time.

Hey Ted,

Awesome job on all these great DIY mods. Love your footage too, though totally unfair to be able to use this great gear on gorgeous islands full of beautiful women!;)

I'm going to take a crack at your matte box, version 2, but had a couple questions since I haven't used a matte box yet.

This version 2.0 has a fixed position top flag? Did you decide you didn't need something adjustable?

And no side flags? Not necessary, too? Or optional?

I imagine when not using a filter, I would keep the filter holder in to keep it light tight?

Thanks again for posting these projects!
