DIY Lights w/ photofloods

I just bought a bunch of 3200K 500-watt photofloods for cheap to build some useful lights. im pretty sure i could build a decent spacelight or chicken coop for general ambient light, but has anyone tried making something that could give off a hard light? like, making reflectors/housings/fresnel lenses? maybe just an open face unit?

You can't build a fresnel with a light like that. The surface area is too big. Fresnels, spots and pars depend upon a small point light as their source lined up with an appropriate sized mirror and then a lens and focusing mechanism. Too hard to do much with and try to DIY it.

You can always try though to take a larger, used fresnel off of ebay and change it to use one of those but I'm not sure why you would. Changing to metal halide would be far more useful (like in my articles) and you could always just use the fresnel's tungsten elements as they are if you buy one so what's the point?

Open face / flood or softbox is your best choice in using those and doing a DIY type fixture. If you build the spacelight, you better use some seriously good fireproof material from some place like www.rosebrand.com.

You could get clamp-on reflectors (make sure they have a ceramic base) and use them that way. However, those globes only have a life of about 4 hours.
As Richard indicates, be REAL careful using them in any enclosed fixture.
Hope this helps.

that is a nice design for a 6' softbox...
wait - ken, did you just say that the photofloods are only good for 4 hours?!
