DIY IndieSlider...

Hi there. Time to add my bit to this humongous thread.

ive got a 16-60 rail and standard carriage. I am mostly interested in motorized timelapses, although use the slider for normal pan shots as well.

i am looking for a motion control rig which can traverse my 600mm rail in say, 1 hour.

this rail and carriage combo has now been around for a while, is there an agreed best way to achieve motorised movement? I've seen lots of links to lots of individual componants, and I'm not averse to putting something together myself, just I don't see an exact list of tried and tested bits.

I would be looking to get a longer rail eventually, so would like the kit to swap onto that, with an extra length belt of course. I think I prefer belt not screw because I will be looking at extra length soon.

camera is canon 5DmkIII. Not a crazy heavy set up.

any help or opinions are great fully received.

cheers.
chris.

Chris-
I know somewhere in this massive thread there are a few answers....but the short answer is that I have yet to see the agreed-upon way to motorized the slider. I personally don't have a use for it so never dug too deep. If you search Vimeo, I know there are some cool solutions there....then try YouTube. I've seen simple to really deep (expensive, involved) options presented.

Hey DVXUser community....can someone help Chris out here?

Hard to believe how many sliders are out there since I started this thread 5 years ago...and how much people will overpay for them. I see a lot of over engineering for a tool that can still be had for under $200!

I'm STILL using the original slider I built all those years ago and it work like a charm. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Happy sliding.

Hi all. I lucked out and sold all but two of my Sliders. I am left with the 12" and the 24". Can anyone recommend a padded case for 25"-27" at between $15-$20 ?
All I found was the 27" Vidpro from B&H.

Here ya go from one of the youngest/cutest DIY'rs out there!
Check out her other slider rigs. She's a bit hard to follow but you could always try messaging her for details.

Here's an update on an original Igus slider 1m long.

FS700 is too heavy for a center supported slider so I bought a 4"x1/4" aluminum bar stock (purchased for $11.25) 1m long and bolted it to the base of the Igus slider.

With a Sachtler plate mounted at center, it is now an un-bending slider capable of supporting up to 10 lbs on the ends of the slider with no bending.

That's a Manfrotto 701 for positioning only.

Regards,
Scott

So... now we know... over 800,000 thread views and 5 years is all it takes for a company in China to want to piggy-back on my good name!
Here's the email I recieved the other day: :Drogar-BlackEye(DBG
Dear Sirs,

We are Weisheng company based in China.
We will register the "zazaslider" as internet keyword and China domain names .cn, .com.cn, .net.cn, .org.cn. We have submitted
our application and are waiting for Mr. Bill Cheng's approval. We think these CN domains and internet keyword are very important for our business.
Even though Mr.
Bill Cheng advises us to change another name, we will
persist in this name.

Best regards

Warren Chiou

SO... beware of cheap imitations! :Drogar-SunGlass(DBG

Anybody else get these emails?

Not sure I get it. Did they offer you payment? Is it joke? I offered you a free brand name. You ought to register it and use it.

Really well done Scott!

Hummm... so that MYT Works thread got me to thinking.... 5 minutes later with parts on hand and I have the beginnings of the ZazaWiderSlider!
This puppy will support some serious weight for all you big rig guys. They will adjust out to about 120mm wide (~ 4 3/4"). All I have to do is design a new carriage plate and offer both the regular Drylin glide blocks as well as the Hybrids. Thoughts?

This is why I designed the universal end bars... the possibilities are endless.

Yeah I'm looking online at my local outlets and am seeing different types of legs... some of them do lock but not at 90 degrees so if you stood it up on end for a vertical shot it would be leaning. Am seeing some with not as broad of a top base so it would be closer to the actual width of my rail which is nice. I hear what you mean about 2 tripods being a pain. I originally did the single center mounted thing on a single tripod but like I said wanted more rigidity for use with zooms. So I went the the 2 tripod route... sort of. I mounted my tripod toward one end of the rail but instead of putting another tripod down at the other end I mounted a monopod using a Manfrotto 234RC tilting monopod head with quick release so I can release it and use my monopod for other things when I need it. Its tilt head lets me fold it up under the slider like your sawhorse. The system works pretty good, is light weight and can be tilted vertical in a matter of a few seconds, but it's still not as rigid as I want and I think the sawhorse is a simpler idea... especially to carry it around.

(that first pic below was just a test and was before I put the monopod tilting head on the monopod)

sorry for asking, but what motor do you use there? never tried with a servo?

Hi, i was wondering, where i can get only the carriage system, or maybe only the "foots" of the carriage
I used LM76 linear motion bearings. They have adjustable units that have a reservoir for lubrication fed through a felt tip, much like a pen. My slider was a bit Larger then the typical DIY as its a mitchel mount and its first job was a national episodic.

Nope, no joke. They are registering in China (.cn).

This is a standard internet scam to get you to buy domain names from them. I get them regularly. So since the first one a couple of years ago it seems the .tw .cn .hk .jp etc domaines I would "loose" 2 years ago are still available according to the last email from another scam outfit that I would loose them if if did not buy them.

Now if I was a Global brand with an office in most countries I would be worried. Though most multi nationals have bought all their domains anyway. However since I work in the UK and Europe at a push I don't really care if there is a web site in cn or hk doing something different. After they are not going to pass themselves of as me! Also I have all the local UK, EU and International domains I need.

There is nothing to stop some one registering ZazaCast films as a company in other countries of the world... there might already be some. It is rare that a name is unique in the world.

I would not worry about it. It is just a fishing exercise to sell some domains.
