^ I'd have to lock it up at night... I'd be afraid it would try to kill me in my sleep!

Nice work.

I am looking at the Igus 1040-A at Amazon, and like it because it looks compact to travel with. (Will be flying to Mexico in a month). But comparing to the 1080 or W16 systems, will it be able to slide nicely with a Canon 60D? I have 3 lenses, a prime, Tokina 11-16, and Canon 70-200. The fluid head I'm using is also quite heavy, comparable to the Manfrotto 501. I'm guessing the telephoto might be too much? I want to mount it on a set of Manfrotton 190XPROB legs. I think I read a few pages back someone was having trouble with it not fitting their tripod?

My head is like 16l bs and the camera an other 25 lbs with all the bells and whistles - no problem here.

Hello, I am just about to order this from Igus, but I wondered has anyone tried out this version? http://www.amazon.com/DryLin®-W1040...UCVG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1304994928&sr=8-3 I only ask because it is half the price of the other one...

That's a smaller version... the 1040 refers to the rail size (10mm) and width of the rail (40mm). It works for small and light cameras. I still recommend the 1660 (16mm rail, 60mm wide) as you are covered for pretty much any rig up to 50 lbs. and slides better IMHO.

Okay, thanks a lot for the response. I wondered about that too. I actually had a closer look at it after I posted and it really looks like it is made for DSLRs with smaller lenses. I have a DVX100B and I think with all the accesories it just might be a bit too heavy for the smaller, lighter system. It wouldn't be so attractive if it wasn't for the much smaller price point...

Here some of my experiences...
If you use a stepper motor to move the glider, the camera will 'wobble' because of the steps at some speeds - especially with the 100mm-carriage. if the carriage is longer (150 or 200) the effect is not so noticeable.
The width of the Rails are depending on what you like. There is enough stability (for bigger cameras) even on the smallest rails.
I'm using the 10-80-1000, so it's just 10mm in height and it can be used for weights up to 480 kg. if you using a belt, you have to have a closer look about the distance between rail and carriage. In case of the 10-xx-xxxx it is about 12mm, so a 10mm belt will perfectly fit.
if you use the wider Track with drilled holes, you can easily attach a stepper without drilling the rail. The narrow tracks have only one row of holes in the middle.
The Tracks of IGUS are very stable, all of them. So, imho you cant choose a wrong one...

for those that may still be on the wall about building a slider because of cost/ordering parts, you can try the $14 slider with all homedepot parts, click through to vimeo to also find a closeup video of the assembly,

cheers

This looks great but would have more value if the parts were listed along with documentation of the assemblage. It looks great but I left frustrated. Clicked through to Vimeo saw no close ups, no shopping lists. If there was a follow up post to this, please link me. I have a shoot in a few days and cannot afford to spend big money.

I should have posted this here and not in Hardware. I know many of you slider guys use this in your set up and in fact it was in this thread that I first saw it and thought about using it to solve my problem.
Manfrotto by Bogen Imaging 325N Video Head Adapter Bowl- for 75 mm and 100 mm Heads
I have an older but excellent Sachtler pedestal style tripod with an pneumatic center column. It is great for dolly moves with a ped-up and down. The only drawback is it was made for a nice flat studio floor and my Video 14 head attaches to it via 3 hex bolts. So when I want the head on regular legs it is a pain to take off and not misplace the screws which go into the tapped holes in the head. I would also like to use other heads on this base.
My question is : Will I still be able to level if I adapt the 325 to the center column? Does it allow for any movement of the ball 100mm or 75mm? If not I guess I will need to level with the legs or install a 338 QTVR Leveling Basel and then the 325N adapter.
Answers? Suggestions?
Thanks
Brian
