DIY IndieSlider...

Finally finished my slider that I bought from Igus on Amazon. Ended up using extra short center column on my Bogan 3221WN tripod that goes very close to ground level and a cheap Vanguard PH21 2-way head mounted to the carriage. The Vanguard has a nice big quick mount that mates well to my HPX170. I chopped about 4 inches off the 1000mm rail to lighten it up as I just didn't need one that long. Here is some fall color stuff I shot last weekend. http://vimeo.com/16168286

Let's be real, IGUS slider is not that great. It's not smooth. Somebody venture out and get something w/ ball-bearing.

New Igus slider for sale

I'm a professional builder of cinema equipment in the east coast. I purchased one of these to test it out. It won't suit my purposes as I move heavy cameras (50+ lbs) but it will serve a small camera just fine.

I can put whatever holes you need into these rail, just let me know. At this time, the rail is completely new in factory condition with no extra holes in it.

I have a 48" length with one carriage. It is the 20mm version, and I believe Igus calls it 80mm width, although the actual width is closer to 100mm. You can send me an email at jason (at) siriusmovies dot com

Yea, These new punks sign up and think they own the place then take a giant **** on the forum and leave. Who knows what they are thinking, at least hes gone...

Hey guys, sorry if I don't read through all the 249 pages, but I have a question. My igus slider tends to be pushed down at the ends quite a bit by the weight of the camera when mounted to my tripod. Now I've seen solutions where people put one tripod on each end, but do you guys have a simpler solution for this? maybe putting the slider onto some sort of metal bar or something to prevent it from dipping at the ends?

What tripod are you using?

Does the rail screw on like this:

Here's mine...no bend or bow...

My Tripod is a goldphoto (http://www.foto-tip.pl/sklep/product_info.php?products_id=526&language=de) well liked here in Europe.

The rails screws on pretty much the same way as yours only that I'm using a quick release plate I screwed onto the rail to attach it to my tripod head.

But before you ask - this is not the problem. The bending obviously comes from the material.
I have the rail 10-80, thats the one with the two rows of drilling holes. i guess most of you guys got the 16-60. should be the same strength of the material though, right?

How about buying 2 cheap monopods and putting them under each end? The tripod would still take most of the weight, but the monopods give a little lift.

There you have it.... I recommend the 16-60, although I find it hard to believe your rail bending and it's really not the head you're using giving way when you slide your rig to one side or the other.
If mounting the rail to a head, you have to make sure you can lock the heads tilt. It has to lock solid...no movement.

Although the 10-80 is made of the same material, the 16-60 would be stronger, just because of the larger diameter of the rail (16mm instead of 10mm).

Most other companies that offer the 10-80 rail have it mounted to a piece of board, to add strength I guess?

Hope that helps.

Zaza -

i have just seen a new igus roller part available - hybrid bearings - they combine dry-lin and a roller in the same part.
four of them would then replace the four bearings you currently have that attach the carriage to the rail.

If anyone has these or does so in the future - could you leave feedback if they are any good?

I have an igus diy slider - and although ok - its not as smnooth as i would like.
seems igus have admitted this by designing these new hybrid bearings.

a set of four would be about 50 quid/dollars.

Those hybrid bearings look very cool! I'd be interested in hearing about them as well. Smoother? Audible noise?
Anyone tried them?

This is old news...you'll have to backtrack through this thread...but in a nutshell, igus didn't create these hybrig bearing for sliders.
First off, the roller is on the SIDE if the rail and is really designed for big, heavy doors...to slide them open & closed. They have NO affect
on the way WE use there stuff.

Here are a bunch of pictures of my test: http://s302.photobucket.com/albums/nn91/zazacast/HyBrid%20Bearings%20-%20ZazaSlider/

It didn't slide any better then the regular bearings...because there's really no weight on the wheel.
I've been talking to them about making a version with the roller on top...and they are working on it!

EDIT:
I found it back on page 170! http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?145701-DIY-IndieSlider...&p=1908974&viewfull=1#post1908974
