DIY IndieSlider...

seems pricey...

seems pricey...

Hmm... just enquired with Igus here in the UK about a 1m length of the 16-60 track and the WW-16-60-10 carriage and have been quoted £173.21 (presumably plus VAT also) which seems quite a bit higher than others here have paid. (that's about $265 at today's exchange rate).

Have the prices gone up, or have I just been quoted a high price?

Cheers,

zinger5

I think I'll give them another ring then - seems strange that a European based company would be charging so much more here in the EU than they are over the US.

I'd try again too. Was it igus directly? If it was a distributor, I'm sure they are marking it up.

Well I didn't expect that: when I queried the price they just said to order it from the US but that I'd probably pay £100 shipping (can't see that myself - it's only a 3kg package!)

It was Igus UK I spoke to direct.

Anyone else UK based who has ordered and paid less? Or any other suggestions on what I could try?

Cheers,

Pricing of igus slides

Pricing of igus slides

Hello all, I think this has been covered in earlier posts, but just to clarify, the price of igus parts varies from country to country. This is typical for more or less all products, for example cars and designer clothes tend to be a lot cheaper in the US than in mainly European countries. There are many reasons for this, and it would take too long (and be pretty boring) to go into them all. But the fact is, prices are different across the board.
Speaking for the UK only, if people purchased the parts direct from igus, then your order would normally be over £100, in which case shipping is free of charge. If you order 10 metres of rail (maybe by a few of you clubbing together) you would save 25% on rail cost. These prices are no secret, you can see all igus prices online, and place orders online if you want.
Again, speaking for the UK only, you get instant credit up to £500 with 30 days to pay.
All igus companies are based on a business model to supply OEM customers with volume product, and at high volume (say anything over 100 metres of rail) the prices fall more or less in line, globally.
Also, note that the main driver for the cost of shipping of DryLin rail is the length, not the weight.
To answer another question raised a few pages back, the igus rail is NOT the same as the PBC rail or any other rail. The igus extrusion is unique to igus, and if you buy a similar looking rail from someone else, it is not the same thing.
Another purchase option is RS Components, who do stock genuine igus parts, the part numbers are:

carriages plates
WW-10-40-10 RS Part 488 5136
WW-16-60-10 RS Part 667 1305

rails
WS-10-40-1000mm RS Part 488 5243
WS-16-60-1000mm RS Part 667 1346

I hope this helps.

Hi mjaldridge,

Thanks for the reply. I understand pricing can be different in various countries but it does seem that we are being really stung here in the UK - even if we did a group buy and ordered 100m of track and 10 carriages say, it would still come to £129.91 - much more than others seem to be paying even in other EU countries for individual purchases.

I appreciate the US market pricing is totally different, but paying 68% more for the parts here seems an excessive markup to me.

Is there no possiblity that Igus UK would be prepared to offer the Indie film community a special rate (or at least a fair, equal rate) across the organisation?

Many thanks,

zinger5

Thanks very much for that Matt - it will be a big help to UK based zaza sliders.

I'll send over an email shortly.

All the best,

Here is the sample footage from the Keels & Wheels event on May 1, 2010.
Lets just say using a rig like this had people stopping and watching me work. I had a lot of questions as to where someone might get something like this.

Nice shootin big box, but that Aston hood is like a mirror. So you were wearin a hat that day....

Just kidding, it really looked pretty good.

Thanks. I love those Aston cars. They are 50 years old and have such a new look to them.

I will update my post soon, and show my DIY video for my 20 80 Igus zaza slider.

I just bought a slider, here in Romania (UE) for 166€, but I have a problem:
At one edge of the carriage the slider moves too easy, at the other one too hard, so I can't mentain a constant sliding speed. Anyone else has this problem?
Thanks

^ I have no idea if this is the right stuff... I don't see them selling igus parts (on the web site). Those aren't igus part numbers.
