DIY IndieSlider...

hy, My quick release plate (357 manfrotto) is on my table (arrived this morning); now you sugget to add the quick-release plate to the bottom of the rail without unscrewing anything from my Tripod right?
In this way i should be ready for floor-level shot to a high-mounted tripod shot within seconds right?
So now do i need to buy another head and this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Manfrotto-3...1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1267721900&sr=8-1-fkmr1 and i should be DONE RIGHT?
if something is missing please tell me Thx

 O.K., this is getting confusing.
Did you get JUST the plate, or the complete QR system?
What's on your tripod now?
Do you have a fluid head now?
Are you trying to use a 2 head approach (rail is attached to a head on the tripod and another head is mounted on the slider carriage)?

Post some pictures or something so I can get a better grip on what you're trying to accomplish...

O.K., so far so good! If you already have a fluid head on your tripod, just attach the plate from that head to the bottom of the rail. This will allow you to quickly mount the rail. (on the head already on your tripod)

Next, mount your second head to the carriage. Depending on the type of head you want to put on the carriage, you may or may not need the manfrotto adapter. If your head just bolts on, you're fine, bolt it on the carriage....if your head has a ball for mounting, then you need to get the manfrotto ball adapter.

I hope that makes sense.

My second rail just arrived. I am making a matched set of rails at diff lengths. I have a 1500mm rail and an 800 mm rail. The car show demo was my inspiration to order a shorter rail for moving around in tighter spaces with crowds of people around. Each rail will soon have a 501 fitted to the 150mm carriages. I am also using Igus' rail brake on each of the carriages. It is very nice. I am also going to pickup 2 of the filmtools 4-8-12 risers for pseudo-jib shots as well. I'll get pics when its all finished. I need the money for the heads though and that might be a few weeks.

Yeah... you'll like that...it's like my 700mm (shooter version). I also have the igus brake on this one, but to be honest,
I like my screw-in brake mod better. I find the extra glide block adds a bit of drag.

With the shorter rail...and the ZazaSlider Feet (of course:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG))...it makes a great run & gun set-up.

Looking at that second picture of the dude holding it, that rail looks radically different on the bottom. Like its got an extra piece there or something. My 2 are flat on the bottom.

This has been an exhilarating thread to read, and I totally get it, having been utterly obsessed with my Igus slider since I discovered it a few weeks ago. My aim is to integrate it into my set-up, so I can keep a steady work-flow (I will be buying the ZazaSlider handles when I get paid next.

So, I was wondering if anyone out there has successfully integrated a Libec 22 head with the Mafrotto 325N adaptor ? as I would like to have my head on the Igus.

Thanks

C.

Ha... it's a secret piece of rail I've been experimenting with!
(and that 'dude' is me...Zaza)

If you have a head with a screw that comes out the bottom... I believe people have been using this adapter with success:

Otherwise...most heads screw on to the 3/8"-16 bolt on the carriage.

Yeah, that's what i have been looking at. I think the thread on the H22 head is bigger than 3/8. Guess the only way to find out of real is to get one!

Any advice on a cheap but sturdy head for the rails to sit on, so I have more flexibility with the slider ?(rotation etc)

Usually 'cheap' and 'sturdy' don't go together.

I don't use my slider that way much, but when I do, it goes on my Manfrotto 503 and works just fine (1000mm rail).

40mm rail

40mm rail

Has anyone tried this with the 40 x 10 mm rail? I want to make a shorter one for travel. I would think it would be fine with a length of 24". This would make a really nice light slider.

Yes... many have. It's a much lighter version and good for small cameras or a DSLR without a big lens on it.

(by the way 700mm gives you that nice 2' slide)

I read this in another forum. Is it true that these are the only lengths you can get a center hole?

-------------------

When you order the length of your rail, make sure you get use the following lengths ONLY.
3-holes = 0280mm
5-holes = 0520mm
7-holes = 0760mm
9-holes = 1000mm
11-holes = 1240mm
13-holes = 1480mm
15-holes = 1720mm
17-holes = 1920mm

These numbers make sure that there is a pre-drilled hole in the center of your rail.

You're better off ordering the solid rail (without pre-drilled holes), measuring...and drilling & tapping your own. You get more threads that way.

Otherwise... yes, if you want pre-drilled holes.

Here's my 700mm, 16-60mm slider:
