DIY IndieSlider...

Update on the Dvcity knock-off: I played around with it a little more and I've actually got it working quite well, so that's a big relief. It's still louder than I would expect, and in hindsight I would have just ordered the legit parts from Igus and built it, but wanted to let people know that it is working. I'll post some samples in the next day or two.

Any idea why it's not on the DVCity web site anymore?

I just got my rails last week and I'm loving this. Now to up the ante...

QUESTION, anybody know where I can get a rubber belt, and some gears? I'm trying to modify my slider to work like the Pocketdolly. Maybe even add a motor or servo for a small motion control rig. Just experimenting with some ideas but I need the rubber belt and the matching gear to pull off what's in my head. Thanks in advance.

BTW - great thread!

Look into the igus ZLW 1040.... I have!

Nope, but the other day I noticed that they have another company name and website that they operate under as well and it was still listed on that site. I can't remember what it was at the moment, but if I look back through my browsing history I can find it.

it's moot. if you want it, buy it from Igus directly. there are no money-savers here...Igus direct IS the money saver. and zaza is the dude who knew it first....1000+posts can't be wrong.

Has anyone figured out how to use just the carriage and build their own rails? Perhaps this is answered but 107 pages of content for this thread is a little much to wade through. I suspect the carriage is designed to work with only the rails they sell - type of metal, smoothness of surface etc.
Thanks ZaZa for sharing this information, I'll join the Vimeo group too.

Cheers

It sure is possible (you just need two aluminum rods with the right diameter) but why would someone do that?

The IGUS rails cost next to nothing (compared to "normal" film gear), are rock sold and work perfect.

Yeah I agree. I think you'd be hard-pressed to build something with the quality of the rails. Those suckers are tough and precise!

I was thinking, zooming in is not natural to the eye the way a camera does it; moving toward an object is far more 'real' and cinematic IMO. To be able to use this tool in a run and gun situation is exciting!

It wouldn't be hard to use the slider as a base for a teleprompter. All you would need is a laptop, a hood and a piece of mirrored glass. It could mount straight on the slider with the camera slid back.

Humm... good idea. Lets us know how that works out & post some pictures.
This could be a very useful.

stabilize tripod?

stabilize tripod?

Is there a more effecient way to keep the slider from bouncing other than using a tripod on one side and a mono pod on the other?

Right now I use my slider for weddings and carrying around a bunch of stuff isn't too ideal... I could probably sand bag the spreaders, but that is a lot more weight to carry around while running and gunning.

The Igus rail I'm using is 5ft long. I'm thinking of down grading to a 36" long rail for portability.

Any ideas would be great!

I'd go with the 1000mm (39") rail. It gives you plenty of slide, doesn't bounce at all and will be much easier to move around. I leave mine right on the tripod. When I have to move, I just lift the whole tripod, slider and all with my shoulder under the rail. Quick & easy!

I know that you don't wish to carry more gear, but using 2 tripods, one on either end of the slider is rock solid. That is the way to go with a long slider.

I just sold my 39" slider and I am upgrading to a 5' rail. The longer travel will allow me to better moves across rooms and objects etc. Sorta kinda like a mini dolly:)

I use a 30" rail for weddings. I wouldn't go any longer. I have it on my tripod the whole time, and I've found that people don't trip on my tripod nearly as often, although someone will eventually whack their head on it.

You'll find it nice for times when everyone stands for the bride. I just slide either left or right to get the shot.

I'm sure you could sell your 5ft in a NY minute.

Hey guys, its about 100 pages in this thread! Too many things to read.

I was wondering if anyone is selling the zazaslider, I've a friend doesn't want to do all the DIY gear... 1m one would be enuff.

Thanks!

I've tried to keep all the good information in the first post so no one has to read through this monster thread.

... but there are a bunch of great ideas throughout!

So can I buy a zazaSlider ready made from anyone? (:

I'd offer to build you one... but Singapore? I think the shipping would cost more than the build!

Anyone can build this slider. Once you have the parts it only takes 20 minutes to drill and tap the holes. That's it. You're ready to slide!

I got a quote from Igus for the Drylin ZLW belt driven system today...

For the 1000mm ZLW 0630 with carriage and hand crank it would be approximately $529.

The Kessler Pocket Dolly costs $539 and the belt stays on top of the rail...

The benefit of using the ZLW is you can push the carriage by hand or use a crank.

The sales person also said if you want to use a different type of slide table with a lead screw, you wouldn't be able to push it by hand, only by using the crank. These are cheaper from what the sales person said (I did not get a quote though).

Anybody wanna figure out a DIY for making the original zaza slider belt driven?
