DIY IndieSlider...

Well I got mine, and it sucks. It glides freely with 2 or all of the glides loose, but as soon as I tighten a 3rd and 4th one, it gets hung up on the rail at certain spots, doesn't glide smoothly. I've unscrewed and screwed them in about 2 dozen times now, no luck. Guy from Igus couldn't explain it.

On another note, everybody I've talked with at Igus knows exactly what this is going to be used for...a camera! :D

too loose then. i was able to tighten mine juuuuust to the point where they started to grip and resist.

hope you can figure it out. i use my slider ALL the time. pretty much every shoot lately.

If 2 are tight diagonally, the other 2 are loose, it runs fine. Might just go with that. Now I need to mount a Cartoni Focus tripod head to it....drilling is on the to do list tomorrow!

I aligned mine once when I first got it and haven't touched it in the last year and a half of use. You have to approach it like you were tightening lugs on a wheel, slowly tighten opposite sides a little at a time.

From first post:

This is OFFICIAL igus procedure for "aligning" the carriage.
It only needs to be done once.

They say

1. Loosen all carriage bolts - (don't remove - just loosen a few turns)
2. slide carriage back and forth to allow bearings to align themselves)
3. (tech actually recommended "tapping" the center of the carriage to "bump" the bearings into place)
4. With downward pressure on carriage tighten the bolts again a few turns at a time (alternating them - i.e. do NOT crank one down and then do the other ones)

I agree. I'd give a replacement a shot. If it doesn't work, you can get your money back. They're pretty good people.

Just got my slider from DVCity in today. Here's my initial notes using it with my 7D and lens:

1. Originally this thing did not move well at all, however after I loosened the parts (looser than they should be) it became a lot smoother, but I expected easier gliding.

2. Because the parts have to be so loose, you have to hold the camera back towards you or you'll run into a lot of friction because only the front two glide blocks/bearings touch with the camera being front heavy with the added weight of the lens.

3. This thing is LOUD. (see sample footage) There's no way I could use this thing in a scene with sound.

4. The carriage screw is a tripod thread, so you have to mount the camera straight to the carriage, if you wanted to mount a tripod head, you'd have to tap a bigger hole (and not having to tap holes is the reason I bought this insteady of DIY because I don't have the proper tools). So for now, no panning or titling during slide.

5. Strangely this product is no longer listed on the DVCity website: http://dvcity.com/dve/product_info.php?products_id=328

6. If the rails are the same size, I'm going to see if I can order the J200UMO-01-...Ø Round liner for round rails WS-...
and for bearing WJ200UM-... from Igus and replace the liners inside the carriage

Joining DryLin rail

Joining DryLin rail

DryLin rail seperate lengths can be joined together, that is another advantage of plain bearings. It is worth putting a small chamfer on each end.

One way to understand how it works would be to imagine you are on top of of hill, and halfway down the hill there is a small crevice. If you went down on roller skates you would fall over at the crevice. This is the same effect as joining two rails and using a rolling or ball bearing. if you went down the same hill on skis, you would not even notice the crevice. This is how DryLin linear slides work.

I work for igus, any questions feel free to contact me.

Here's my setup with the Cartoni Focus tripod/head.

PortaDolly.com no longer belongs to me. I'm hoping zazacast picks it up.
Just finished prepping a head to head test of two 24" sliders. Igus based and Indislider Mini.
You guys with Canon HVxx series cameras are gonna love what I found instead of a head on the Platform. The donation just arrived from Taiwan and it's beautifully smooth and reasonably priced.
Some real footage to replace all this talk soon.

After reading all 104 pages of this thread, I ordered my parts today. They said it could be as long as 4-6 weeks. They are going to have to rethink their inventory stocking considering how big this has gotten. Thanks to all that have contributed all of their unique ideas.

So much for the big delay. Mine came yesterday.
