DIY IndieSlider...

either you see sh*t, or some selling sh*t into solid gold. but sometimes, you see something useful, and i'll be buying direct, like most of you....hell, these suppliers may not even know that what they offer (if equated to the pro video world) is actually REALLY inexpensive!

EDIT:...damn...sorry. expect prices to go up in a minute.

Great post and cool build.

The first thing that comes to mind with mechanical friction systems is stiction (hence the development of wheels, fluid damping, etc)... the same phenomenon that screws the end of your otherwise perfect pan. I've built some stuff using teflon sheet to reasonably good effect, but I'm using mass to overcome a notchy finish and leverage to initiate smooth starts.

So how about this thing? How's the stiction... does that space-age plastic handle that well or do you have to make several attempts at overcoming stiction?

I can't wait to start this project my self but I've had that same thought in my mind the whole time. I wanted to see if anyone had the answer to this because my shots on this probably won't be cut in. I want to start that smooth stuff going. I will attempt the rubber band trick with this asap. Does anyone have any sample clips? If so can you post?

thanks!

What is the price from igus with shipping?

It was kind of cool that when I went to the igus site I saw plastic wire tracks.
So I know my good long time buddy, one of my best friends who sells Plastic Wire Tracks. So I called him up to see if he also sold the W tracks like igus, and he says "I represent igus, I'm a sales rep for them" So I said to my self "I'm in Luck!"

I'm home on Thursdays, and Fridays to receive shipment so he's going to put the order in on Monday. I will post my findings on the price.

Cost me $168.50 with shipping to my door.... there are two different test videos in the first post.

I just saw the clip, it looks really good! I'm so exited now! Can't wait to get this thing! I'll let you know if I get a better deal.

A little off topic but when I saw the Igus company mention...I realized that the place it a 5 minute ride from my studio...weird eh?

Hey are you building these for people for a fee? I think I would be interested.

Actually, I was talking to my wife about that last night. I'm thinking of making a few and putting them up online to see what happens. I'm currently building a Jib, and a few other things. I made a dolly recently that is working wonders right now. I made a butterfly out of PVC, and I also made Speaker stands. I have all this stuff recorded step by step on Video but I can't seem to find the time to finish it up and post it. I should have it all up in the next 2 or 3 weeks.
My main thing right now is that I'm building a website to sell stock footage. I think I'm gonna hand that project off to my wife soon! I'll just record the stuff!
Ok friends, we talk soon.

Come up with a price..Would be interested in one...Feel free to contact me.

p.s. that IGUS place is right down the street from me in East Providence.

I placed my order on Wednesday. Came out to $158.03. I live in the US in Jacksonville FL. I believe they are based out of Rhode Island.

Do you find that the center of gravity becomes too high to keep the rig stable with that bogen ball adapter?

I'm considering buying that bogen ball adapter and mounting it on the slider and then buy a half ball and mount it underneath the slider. That way I can pretty quickly go from being just on the tripod to being on the slider on the tripod without any tools. If it's too high and makes the rig less stable, I may just get a bogen 501 head or something and keep it mounted on the slider.
