DIY firestore anywone???

I'm wondering what can be done by this group to build a DTD similar to the firestore and citidisk offerings.

Firewire Hard Drives <-- Newegg's available firewire hard drives.

Can we just plug these into our camera's and push record?

I'm assuming there is something intermediate that allows this DTD to happen.

Hopefully this forum has users that can describe what is necessary, because I'd be willing to build a test version once I understood what needed to be done.

You need a combination of software and hardware to make this happen. There is enough firewire and DV support in the linux kernel to make this a farly easy effort for a reasonably skilled software developer.

It is unlikely you can just slap a few things together. You can probably find some commodity hardware that would do the trick, but you are gonna need custom software.

Yeah, unfortunately external hard drives need software to tell it what to do. Firestore has just that. However this consists of circuitry and displays with menu's.... umm thats crazy stuff to DIY

man, i just want that to come out...it's better than buying a small dv cam and capturing. any more than just their website as to when it's coming out?

Sounds like something I might take a look at... anyone have an HVX they could send me so I can run some tests?

Dude, I know I started the thread and all but...screw DIY that catapault thing in the above link is exactly what I'm looking for!!! (the question now is whether or not the new canon xh-a1 will record to this without using a tape)

I'm gonna buy that and turn my two 250gb external drives into a backpack mobile video archive!!!

Super sweet!!!

thanks twocik23

you rock, so does this forum, seriously we're all lucky we have this forum to come to and get our questions answered.

you might be able to set up a gumstix computer since they are super small

Unfortunately the gumstix does not have USB host. This would make it pretty difficult. The gumstix is also a bit pricey for this application, well in theory anyway :)

There's a new product coming out that attaches to an ipod, here check it out

My theory is maybe if we can find/make software like the one they are using here, maybe this might work?

Any thoughts??

I wonder how much standard def video you can get on an iPod? Or, as someone suggested, maybe a motorcycle battery or two, wired into an AC/DC converter, and just an external USB drive.. either way, it seems great.

So end result.. even considering commercial solutions.. what is the biggest "BANG FOR THE BUCK" in portable DV storage? I do events often running 3-6 hrs (about 2-3 actual taping hours) and would love to have a capability to not have to baby sit my "capture" later.. its agonizing.. how many bad weddings can you see?

So anyone have any suggestions, revelations.. and cost effective solutions for "direct to HD" recording?

looks like the catapult is on hold for now....hopefully it will eventually see the light of day.

I'm definitely going for that Catapult device when its out. I'm in the game for a new iPod since mine is like 2 years old. This could be sweet.
