DIY Counterbalance?

Hey guys,
Ive been looking for solutions to the counterbalance problem on my Canon 7D rig. Its front heavy and I want something to balance it out. I know I could just hang a weight easily on the back, but id like something that can hang from the back of the 15mm rails. The nice solutions that are on the market are from about $130 up. For WEIGHTS!!! I feel like there must be an elegant solution to the problem. Ive added some pictures of the solutions out there. I thought the cinecity one would be cheaper, but its on par with the redrock in terms of price.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

I use weight plates with a rod the same size as the middle hole. But I don't know that it'll work for your situation. Standard weights are an option, although they do definitely look less elegant than what you posted.

Well there's always lead. One can find wheel weights from tire shops around town and usually take them off of their hands for little or no cost.
Unfortunately it's not a simple "drill and attach" project. You need to melt, cast, and paint it to seal in the lead particles.

Do this at your own risk. Lead causes cancer in the state of California. ;)

Otherwise you might hit up some machine shops and dig through their scrap bins. I've found nice chunks of aluminum on the cheap.

G'luck.

How about a large battery taped with electric tape to conceal it's ugliness? I've seen it used before, and it could work out since the 7D isn't as heavy as some weight of those counterweights are supposed to counter.

I am actually thinking about what to use myself now that I'm nearing completion of my shoulder mount. I'll probably go with a battery too, unless someone has a better idea. Still won't look nearly as "pro" as the ones shown, and you'd have to tape em to your rails.. but meh, personally utility > presentation.
