What can I do with a beam splitter?
HDR VIDEO: http://vimeo.com/14821961
3D VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX7ybS7fnow
*3K VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AuyVz89AXg
*This is unproven (with a beam splitter)..Still a theory frankly.

You've seen the $5000 beam splitter. Here is the $50 beam splitter

This thread is dedicated to discussions about how to build a DIY beam splitter or ways that we can improve upon the one that is currently being used.
Wanna shoot HDR video? 3D video? 3K video? Good! Here's how YOU can help!

  1. Build a rig of your own and see if you can improve it! Here are some areas that I JUST KNOW are going to need to be addressed: What Reflective surface? There are MANY to experiment with. Which is the best for what circumstances/purposes etc? (Or some other improvement.)
  2. Refine the Workflow(s). There are 3 (so far to be addressed) I'll make threads for each, because I suspect that there needs will be VERY different. So choose one that you're interested in and see if you can flesh it out. Each one of these workflows is TRULY BLEEDING EDGE. You may be the FIRST PERSON TO TRY IT. (Especially with the 3K stuff) So any tests will be helpful.
  3. Donate. I don't even know how this works (someone PM me that has set this stuff up before because I'm clueless), but I know that for the 3K project we need some cameras with fast FPS and quick buffer recovery. We want cameras that people can actually afford too once we figure it out. (Panasonic FZ100? Casio EX-F1? Or some other cameras? Technology may not have a camera that is fast enough yet?) Which HDR software should we use? Still processing? Lightroom plug-in? AE process? AE pluging? We might as well figure it out. This will take are collective time and occasionally some greenbacks.
  4. Lead the way. I KNEW that I could TEAR UP the RIG. I KNEW I could lead the way there. Once I saw it, it was over. Simple, cheap, quick. I know I'm NOT this community's expert when it comes to 3D, or HDR, or AE, or synching cameras. I know there are some TRUE EXPERTS in our community. Show us the way. I'm going to continue with the rig, refine it some, then I'm going to take a "whack" at HDR video. I've created the other areas (3d/3K) because I know that they are just BEGGING to be refined as workflows. So STEP UP and LEAD THE WAY. I know that my life is so busy that I won't be able to "move mountains"...but I'll do my best with the time and resources and energy that I have. DO THE SAME! HELP US ALL OUT! I want to see some HDR/3D/3K footage flying off this beam splitter...or a better beam splitter! Just lead the way.
I'll add a tutorial here (step by step) on what to buy and how to build the DIY BEAM SPLITTER.

If anyone is out there: I'm working on the DIY BEAM SPLITTER rig today. Address the workflows if you have some time. Chris Light is going to be messing around with some HDR VIDEO workflow(s)/testing that...so either join him, or mess with the 3d or 3K stuff.

Do me one other favor, ...post in the appropriate workflow area so we can see where you're at. :) I'll get a tutorial up later today on the rig, but I MUST address the "angle setting" mechanism. I've got some ideas, but this could take some time.

so once you export from lucisarts program, then how do you get the footage back into your nle?
Drag all of them to the timeline and set length for each image as 1 single frame. I've used to do it that way although there might be other ways too.

Avid actually used to have an import that allowed you to pull in images as a sequential grouping that automatically turned it into video footage. Not sure if it still does. I'm sure I'll find out soon myself. :)
