DIY Apple Boxes

I just found this board so I figured I'd sign up and jump in. I don't own a DVX (I shoot a Canon XL2), but there is a ton of great info on these boards!!!

Anyway, here is a short tutorial I wrote about making your own apple boxes. For those who don't know, they're a "swiss army knife" on a set... balance a c-stand, stand on them, screw something to them, prop something up with them, etc. Their uses have yet to all be discovered. Enjoy:

I know that is an old post and I probably would have used the link if it was working a month ago. I just made my own from scraps I got off a construction site. Sure was a lot of work (at least 2 days for 2 sets). I used a router to smooth the edges, which would make the edges look more consistent. I will say I don't know if I would want to make another set unless I got the wood for free. I needed a table saw, router, finish sander, belt sander, drill, jigsaw, and lots of clamps and a vice (which not that many people already own like I do). I would have preferred a table router for instance. A solid table saw is a must or the pieces will shrink/grow as you rip them. Mine was marginal, worked but joints on a few pieces needed to be sanded down prior to finishing. I am not sure about the plugs vs countersunk finish nails I used. I did have to pre-drill for the nails. Some of the deigns I saw had handles/grooves in the pancakes as well. Accomplishing that was beyond my tool set.
