Dixie Chicks Concert DVD Shot With DVX100

Re: Dixie Chicks Concert DVD Shot With DVX100

awesome, i'm wondering if they shot in 24p or 24p advanced?

Re: Dixie Chicks Concert DVD Shot With DVX100

Shouldn't make a difference. If post was done at native 24, the output for bropadcast will be 2:3:2:3 and whatever it was shot at will have no bearing on the final look of the program.

If they posted in 30i, then they most likely shot NORMAL.

Now I know what to get my daughter for Christmas.

Re: Dixie Chicks Concert DVD Shot With DVX100

thanks michaelp. i always look forward to your posts around the net. i'm wondering then, why is it still preferred to shoot in 24p advanced rather than 24p standard if the footage will never be transferred to film but to a 24p dvd if the final quality will be the same as you noted above?

note: i use final cut pro 4

Re: Dixie Chicks Concert DVD Shot With DVX100

Well, today, after reading this post, I went and bought my wife the dixi chicks dvd, as an early christmas present. She was wondering what my sudden need was to watch her favorite band. She asked "wow, do you like the dixie chicks now?". I admitted that I really just wanted to watch the dvx footge, but really they're not that bad.
As for the video footage itself, it looks as if it is a mix of 24p and 30P, so I am guessing that it would have been filmed in the 24P normal mode. It does look great, vibrant colors, smooth, very filmic motion, and great overall camera work. It is interesting to watch them change clothes every three or four seconds.

Adam/ Scharky...... that was funny. I have to admit.

Scharky, you going to the concert? hehhe

Adam., make sure she wants to watch it first or you'll get busted. :o

Re: Dixie Chicks Concert DVD Shot With DVX100

Yeah, we actually ended up watching it together. She was soooooo happy. She has already hinted that she wants to go to a dixi chicks concert when they come through washington. She hints just about every time she listens to a cd or hears them play for that matter. while we were watching I kept hearing "I can't wait too see what they look like in person" or "I wonder how she'll have her hair when we go". I think I'm already stuck.
Man that $12 for the dvd is going to end up costing me about $100.

Re: Dixie Chicks Concert DVD Shot With DVX100

The only difference is that ADVANCED was developed so that 24p native capture could hapen over FireWire. There would be a slight hot to quality if the blended frame needed to be decompressed and recompressed to create the oriignal frame, but I doubt very much it would be noticeable.

The whole "shoot advanced for going out to film and DVD" has no real affect. It is all about how your NLE deals with pulldown and how it was captured SDI, DV, analog etc.

Re: Dixie Chicks Concert DVD Shot With DVX100

Advanced does not split a field and add it to your progressive footage as Standard does.... even though they both technically get removed, your NLE can do it better, faster and more efficient (of course if it supports 24pA)... I am almost certain I will never shoot standard ever again.. unless by accident.

For an explanation of the difference between 24p standard and 24p advanced see Adam Wilt's article at:

http://www.adamwilt.com/24p/index.html#24pRecording

Basically, if you edit in 24 fps, shooting in 24p advance gives you cleaner footage and makes it easier to edit because 24p advance records more whole frames than 24p standard.

"Basically, if you edit in 24 fps, shooting in 24p advance gives you cleaner footage and makes it easier to edit because 24p advance records more whole frames than 24p standard."

This is not true. The difference between NORNAL and ADVANCED is only how the "ALREADY" captured frames are stored onto tape that on a recorded signal of 59.94 fields. There is no such thing as "recording more whole frames" 24p is 24 frames per second progressive capture regardless of pulldown cadence.

The confusion may be from the fact that NLE's that do not understand ADVANCED pulldown and needs to be post processed may lose one geration of decompress/recompress although it would be very hard to see that generation.
