Dissapointed with Panasonic

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

I researched my purchase like no other (torn between XL1s and DVX100; thank god I chose correctly) and knew about the DVX100a for sometime.

Your research wasn't flawed.

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

The Original DVX100 is arguably the best pro-sumer camera available..

If that were true, it wouldn't have been discontinued a year after release. The argument about new technology is not valid. By your own accord they had the technology originally, simply not perfected. A public notice should have been released indicating their intentions to release an improved version months before the old version was discontinued.

The DVX100 is by no way obsolete.. many people are gonna use the original DVX100 for many years to come.

Your point? It is obsolete. It offers sub-standard operation (arguable, but by Panasonic's own accord the "A" has improved features that affect the quality of video recorded). It has been replaced by a fixed version. People will be unable to buy new ones once supplies run out. Every person with a DVX100 would trade it in for an "A" if it was free (unless they are simply determined loyalists).

Forget it man... Panasonic releasing an updated camera so fast  is innovation..

Innovation is great. Not when it screws over the people that believed your product was the best of the best a month before you tell them they are wrong.

Oh boy.. I am gonna hate to see what you say when the DVX200 comes out....

Well, again, I would be with you on this if I hadn't clearly stated that I had beefs with the DVX100 even before I ordered it. As per the info I have of the "A", I have very little to complain about.

If, however, they released this camera with half the features, and then a "B" next December with the rest of them, Panasonic knowing that they planned to do this, I'd be equally pissed off.

Also, the DVX200 would be a completely different camera, and Panasonic would have to make grave changes for it to be accepted by the public well. The "A" is not a completely different camera.

Your research must have been flawed.

Entirely possible, but I did do the best i could. I do believe that there was no way of me knowing about the release of the "A". From what I know, this was known at the earliest in late October, and likely in and around mid November. That's about a month in advance. Definitely not good for the poor saps that placed their orders on October the 14th.

Anyways, I know this is a DVX enthusiast forum and I am indeed a DVX enthusiast. I would not have invested the money that I did into it if I wasn't. I'm a cheap bastard, and even if its not a big deal to some of you, it's a really big deal to me.

I'm happy Panasonic has released a super-cool version of the camera. I think it is irresponsible of them to discontinue a product with only a month's fore-warning. I also think it is irresponsible of them to do this without offering their DVX100 customers some sort of upgrade program.

On a side note, I really do not understand how any of you seem to defend this whole release as being "technological innovation", and regular advancement. Panasonic knew they were going to release an upgraded version, they released this information only a month before the action ocurred, and the new released version simply improves many of the lacks in the older version, without really bringing anything new and innovative to the table. On top of this, the price of the new one is extremely similar to the price the old one sold at.

In any technological field (such as computers, of which i am completely obsessed) you know video cards are coming out every few months. You have forewarning. The friggin company advertises the new ones as much as the old ones. You know what features you are accepting and what you are turning down. You have the choice to make, and the only variable that determines your level of product is money.

I do not recall one incident in the many, many years I have spent in computer hardware where a company released a replacement for a product quite recently after it was released (relatively speaking to the price) unless there were bugs in the old version, in which case they sponsored a recall program.

So there it is. Panasonic is a cool company, moving forward, anhilating the competition. They could improve by:

1. Informing the public of their intentions a little earlier
2. Sponsor upgrade programs in cases where they screw up #1.

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

Decius, Decius, Decius.

Why did you order the damn thing when you say "You had beefs with it before ordering?"

I see your point. I really do. The fact is, sometimes companies do not issue press releases simply because the product is in a beta test mode. Sigh...

No one here is in complete contradiction. I don't think anyone here is a loyalist (Leave that to the Xl1 crowd) I just think most of us here knew exactly what we were getting.

Just out of curiosity, what are you planning to do with the camera? I hope you're not intending to re-make LAWRENCE OF ARABIA.

I'm kidding; chill.

Serious, what are your plans using the camera?

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

My choice was between the Sony PD-150 and the DVX. It would have been nice to have 4:2:2 color space option from time to time, but the 24 and progressive options on the dvx make it so worth it. I was really bugged after I tried out the 100a about the slower shutter speed and closer focusing distance, but I realized that if I make a little more money with my camera, I'll just buy a 100a and then I'll have both. ;D

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

Dude, get over it and quit your whining. The 100 was out for over a year before the update. I too bought mine only a couple of months ago. I spent a couple of months doing research before ordering the 100. Of course I was a little disappointed when a new version came out a few months later, but am I second guessing or regretting my purchase..no way. **** happens...deal with it. I don't see what you're trying to accomplish with your posts.

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

John: I don't really know how to label what I do. Mainly film shorts to films. Professionalism is extremely critical in what I do. And I'm chilled. :-)

RCE: Well, I know exactly why i posted what i posted. If you can't figure it out, think harder. What i'm trying to figure out is what you hoped to accomplish with yours...

As for "**** happens, deal with it", that's a pretty un-idealistic way of looking at events. Although I don't dissagree with your method of thinking, I pity the fact that that seems to be your intial response.

Re: Disappointed with Panasonic

Dude.. you need to chill the **** out. The camera isn't obsolete... you pointed to the dictionary definition so read it. There is nothing wrong with the original DVX100, its not a faulty camera like you are professing, so relax. The original camera still is one of the best cameras around, the DVX100A is just a few steps better.

I cant believe you would expect Panasonic to warn everyone when they buy a camera that a new one is gonna come out down the road.. no **** sherlock, Like I said its normal for electronics to get better and better every year.

Jesus. Go sell your camera and buy an XL1... Canon takes 5 years between models so at least you can feel better buying one and stop bitching already.

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

The Loooovee Boooattttt... Making another ruunnn. Looveee....

Sorry, comic relief.

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

Love is in the air.. can you feel it Love is in the air..

Yeah.. no **** Elvis.. people have been waiting years for the XL2, I bet if Decius took his DVX back tommorow and bought an XL1S Canon would release the XL2 on monday.. lol

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

And then DVX200 then what!! And why doesn't he/she know about the squeeze mode? 8)

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

This is a pointless conversation, because Decius won't be satisfied. Canon's XL1S was just as sudden an announcement. Electronics companes hesitate to release specs until they are finalized, otherwise alot of people would complain about failed expectations (more people, for example, then are complaining about what you are complaining about). The DVX100 and DVX-100A are truly minimally different. If you took everything that makes the DVX-100A great as a camera, as compared to other comparably priced prosumer models, your list likely would include everything that the DVX100 already has. You must be new to the world of video, because being unhappy with the DVX-100 can only be a product of unrealistic expectations... it is an amazing camera, capapble of scores of things no other camera can deliver at less than $15,000. Panasonic has given the user so much more control with the DVX line, and the 24p that they use is such an innovation. The chips are great and the different color matricies and gamma curves are truly an innovation. Maybe you enjoy being unhappy, but honestly, there's no reason. I defy you to prove that anything about the DVX-100A will make more than 1 of your first five projects differentat all from what it would have been with the 100. Are you getting *very* close to the subject? Are you shooting in *very* slow shutter speeds? Do you have an NLE that can't make a one frame sound adjustment? Then quit your whining, and become a filmmaker and go out and use your camera to do something great... that's why you bought it. Trust me, from experience, you've got a camera that can do amazing things... celebrate THAT, don't whine about the bad timing of your purchase. I'm glad Panasonic is updating the DVX after a little over a year. The Canon XL1 became the XL1s (they discontinued the previous one that time too, by the way) after several years, and have yet to update. I may buy a DVX-100A in a few months, but that won't stop me from being happy and excited when more user comments are used to improve the camera for a DVX-100B or DVX-200 by March of 2005. This is the nature of the beast, and Panasonic needs to be championed for continuing to make improvements as they become possible, instead of sitting on a substandard camera like Canon has done.

Get over it.

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

Im stressed out just reading this thread... OTOH I am lucky, I bought my PD150 two years ago and Sony has been kind enough to do practically nothing of note in the under $5000 camera market since. I'm so impressed with their loyalty to their customers that I hang out in DVXuser.com. My next camera will be 24p... And 16:9 ccds would be sweet too (DVX200 maybe?) ;D

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

Well said Wiyum

Hes from Vancouver.. It snowed here last week (never happens normally) and I think maybe that's why he's pissed...

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

Hehehe. Lot of white noise here.

I'am just waiting for my new DVXa in 24 hours I hope. Even I'w have problems with tape jam, crapy focus, reset to default, big noise or whatever, I will just play arround with it. We are always beta tester in new technology release stuff. But beside cash and marketing from some Panny point of view, we must continue to test and post for improvements.

Re: Dissapointed with Panasonic

I'd don't own a DVX100 as yet and I'm still tempted to buy the older model as it's around AUD 1,500 cheaper than the "A" model will sell for and mostly the improvements will have little impact once it's kitted out the way I intend. The only thing that's going to make me fork out the extra $1,500 is the way cooler color scheme.

Now if you think Panasonic are not playing fair, how about Sony. They've milked the PD150/VX200 for all it was worth and what's the biggest improvement on the PD170? They changed the color of the body. You think I'm joking right? When I asked one of the guys from Sony Japan that was the first feature he mentioned.

In the process they droped the resale value of our 4 PD150s by $1,500 each. Is the 170/2100 a better camera? Some would say it's worse given the problems they're having with audio on it.
So enjoy what you've got, heck you could have got stuck with a PD150. I'd also suggest one reason the upgrade is going to cost you so much is because the street price of the old model dropped so much due to the pending release of the "A" model.
