Display out in 4K?

I have no display info in the SDI out in 4K mode which is a big problem as I am using an external monitor as my VF. Any ideas??? Thanks!

The OSD doesn't work in 4K. It only works when you're in an FHD or AVCHD recording mode. It's also disabled if you have the output set to 10-bit.

Thanks Barry. This is a huge disappointment. Had the camera for a few months and have been loving the setup with my Small HD sidewinder and an Anton batt on the back for counter weight. Seems my run and gun prayers were answered.... until today, when I needed to shoot 4k. This is an absolute deal breaker for me. Looks like its gonna have to be the FS7 with the new 18-110 lens and the DVX200 will go onto eBay. Bummed.

The point is to voice my frustration with this particular design oversight in the hopes that someone at Panasonic might see the post take some action to rectify the issue. Get it?

Why can't you use the DVX's LCD alongside your external monitor and side finder. I use exactly that sort of setup with an Atomos Shogun flame and occasionally with the smaller and lighter BM video assist 5" and the same small hd 502 + sidefinder. I am actually quite keen not to clutter up the Shogun and finder with the OSD. You have to have the LCD open to access any touch features anyway. Where is your problem? :)

When possible, I find this to be a totally workable solution. When I had the PIX-E5H for evaluation, I kept it mounted on a Noga arm on top of the camera; the readouts were on the LCD and the clean image was on the PIX's monitor and it was ideal. I understand that there will be some shooting arrangements where the monitor won't be near the camera and this wouldn't work, but if possible, it works fine.

Can't tell if you're being facetious or not, but assuming this comment is serious -- yes, you'll likely find that a $13,000 camera can do more and have fewer limitations than a $4,200 camera can. When you pay 3x as much for something, you can expect that there's more power and capability to cope with various requests. Or, put another way, when something costs 1/3 as much, you can expect that they had to trim a few corners or lop off a few capabilities to get it there. That said, you would want to check with current FS7 owners to verify if it can do what you're asking, as it would be unwise to assume. Sometimes the engineering team has to make compromises. It's my understanding that some of the entry-level or even medium-level Sonys, like the FS5, can't simultaneously support recording UHD and having two outputs; so you can record it and get the LCD, but you won't have any HDMI or SDI output at all. Or, you can record and get HDMI/SDI output, but the LCD goes blank. Point being, you never know what compromises may have been made, so you'd want to double-check before trading up or over; there may be some things the DVX is doing for you now that you're taking for granted, that a different camera may not be able to do at all.

The problem is that I often find myself shooting long stretches of handheld and my preferred method is to use a Zacuto baseplate and put the camera on the shoulder with the Small HD 501/sidefinder as an eyepiece and keep the LCD tucked in and out of the way. Where the 501 ends up sitting is directly in the path of the LCD screen so pulling it out to check the display is tricky in the heat of the moment. As far as the FS7 it would seem you'd get the full display in 4k as you are using a dedicated VF instead of a 3rd party setup, but you're right. I'll certainly confirm before pulling the trigger. Today's cameras are all pretty incredible, but to me it seems like while the tech specs can be impressive the ergonomics can be lacking and the DVX200 is case in point. We are now in a world where every shooter I know has multiple cameras and drawers full of 3rd party rigging hardware. Most everyone is using an eyepiece or loupe on their C300/5D/Gh4/Fs7. Seems to me guys want to shoot with their eye in an eyepiece I bought the F5 just so I can do that and that camera has been great but I'm trying to provide a package at a lower price point. The DVX200 is a great camera and does a lot of things well, but I'm really disappointed by the lack of this feature.

DVX200 is a terrible full-size shoulder-mounted camcorder. It is also a dreadful confectionery oven and has some of the worst ergonomics ever for a dish washing machine.

You changing the ergonomics of a palmcorder with third party accessories to turn it into a shoulder mount camcorder, which it is not, and then complaining about its designed palmcorder ergonomics not working like a shoulder cam, then exclaiming you're off to use another camera, is trolling, sir. Me pointing that out using dry wit is certainly not. Have a nice day. :)

There are always trade offs with price vs performance. I think the DVX200 is the best bang for the buck on the market. I wanted an FS7 as well but decided on the DVX200 as it met my overall budget so I could get more essentials in other areas. Production is all about compromises otherwise we would still be tweaking on a project forever. :-)
