Display markers: Inner versus outer box

OK, another burning question that I couldn't find the answer for by doing a forum search:

Could someone kindly explain to me what the two marker boxes are typically used for, the ones that show up when pressing the zebra button? I'm assuming they aid in framing, but I'm wondering why there's a little off-center box inside the larger box.

Thanks! :)

Ah! So that's how I got those little boxes in there. I was just randomly pushing buttons and there they were....and no idea what they were for or where they came from. :)

The inner box is the camera's spot meter, showing you the level of exposure of whatever's framed within the box.

Thanks. That's what I thought, but it's a little odd that it's off-centered. Is there any any special purpose to the outer box?
