Disney to buy Marvel!?

Why would you guys care? I'm glad to see it happen although Iger could have bought it for $1.5 billion less 12 months ago, glad to see Ike get the extra money, he is a really good guy. It's more for merchandising with Disney's strong hold in Wal-Marts, they sell over $1B a year of toys there. The Marvel movies aren't going to change, Disney just owns them now after Paramounts deal is up (5 more films for P to make).

I don't think anyone is freaking out over it. It's just a pretty big news story considering the interests of those around here.

I never saw it coming.

Does it change anything? Not really. Still an interesting story when a company like Disney pays billions of dollars for Marvel studios.

I would love to see a great Marvel CG animated movie in the hands of Pixar but that probably won't happen. :)

Very few people knew about this deal, they did a great job of keeping it quite, when Disney (certain departments) went into lock down this morning most people knew what was happening just not this soon.

Remember the best thing that ever happened to Miramax and Dimension was when Disney bought them and infused them with lots of cash, that was Miramax's hay day when they had all the oscar contenders and winners.

It's a good thing for the industry and general public.

Marvel's stock went up $9.72 a share today and Dreamworks also went up 6.5 % on the takeover news.

I think this will be bad for Marvel's coporate culture. But I wish I had their stock.

Meh, I'm surprised they don't already own them.

Honestly, after hearing there are few mega companies that own almost every big product, service, etc... I've just given up hope for independent companies. Forget about start-up companies.

Plus I highly doubt they would "disney" marvel. Just doesn't make sense. they don't do it for every other brand/company they own, even the ones we don't know they own. Only Disney needs to be Disney. This is why they use the 'touchstone' brand for the more adult stuff. They're just buying the company, they're not changing it.

Never really heard of companies changing the companies they buy. They buy the brand and everything that comes with it, so they make sure to keep it the same.

Supposedly Disney is going to have a very hands-off approach to Marvel and its properties. Still, ya gotta wonder if Marvel ever feels like pushing the envelope if Disney will let them. Pixar churns our nothing but PG. For the most part Marvel has completely pussed out when it comes to characters like Wolverine and the Punisher in their films and animation, but I always had hopes for the day when Marvel would just say, "Ah, **** it" and let the adamantium fly. ;)

Being a devout animation fanatic, though, and having spent the better part of my life watching Warner Bros/DC crush anything and everything to ever come out of The House of Ideas' animation department, I for one am ecstatic about the news, as Disney has repeatedly voiced its wishes to secure Marvel character rights specifically for animation purposes.

It's going to be weird, though, feeling like Stan Lee is now 100% obsolete, I always felt in some small way he still mattered to the folks at Marvel. But he's got his ridunculously large paycheck now and that's that. Not a bad life's work.

Overall, good stuff -- so long as they don't **** with Deadpool (in comic form).

Disney will let Marvel push the envelope all they want. This deal wasn't made just for movies it was made to sell toys / action figures, huge business! G.I. Joe has sold 5 billion dollars worth of toys since 1964 and Disney want's future G.I. Joe's, the only way to do that is brand them in movies, the creator of the G.I. Joe toy also has deep ties to Marvel with other toys / action figures he created and licenses to them along with comic book stories and thinks it's the best thing that ever happened. There will be some kick ass movies coming out, that's for sure!

The Wal-Mart effect in the movie industry is really starting to take hold.
