Discussion of dv.com results

Great post Jay.

I agree the HVX200 rez results from the dv.com tests are disapointing, but at the
same time a bit confusing.

Looking at some footage I've seen, it sure appears to be higher than those results indicate. I'm not saying the results are inaccurate. They are just puzzling.

Regardless, in the end, it's all about the picture.

Steve
Think about it. They (adam, barry, nate and the others) did their rez test correctly. There was motion added to the test and the camera's task was to hold rez with motion. Adam is a sharp cookie. Most people use the still resolution and certainly manufacturers use the still rez for their spec but it is not accurate.

I hear you stephen.
As I wrote in the message you copied "I'm not saying the results are inaccurate".

Again,
I still think we need to take closer look at why.
Even Adams results end with "?"

I think all there were surprised.

it was a great review over there by adam.. as mentioned hes a smart cookie that boy, gives Barry a run for his money. I dont think looking at the article you could put the HVX in 2nd last though, only on resolution.

Resolution isnt everything though... remember the Varicam and Sony 900s been different resolutions for years and people still pick the lower rez varicam cause it just looks better.. as even mentioned in this article.

Obsessed much? :undecided
Apparently, the XLH1 has developed a nasty little CA anomaly.
It's not like standard CA, and I don't think it's quite like edge enhancement.
For now I'm just calling it the deep purple anomaly, or maybe deep purple obsession?

Actually, we have people recording Uncompressed HD from their Andromeda DVX's on a $400 mac mini and $200-$300 external firewire drive.

I've noticed that from every single clip that has been posted. Both the XL-H1 and the HD100 exhibit some -horrible- chromatic aberration.

I believe this is caused because the internal lenses on the other cameras(DVX, HVX, Z1) have more elements in them, and the more elements the easier the lens designer can correct for aberration.

The fact that these other cameras have excheangable lenses, doesn't immediately mean that the lenses they come with are great. I'm not sure if the removable factory lenses would even qualify as 'HD' in the professional world.

Juan, thanks for being here.. I have been following the reel Stream systems since the begining. I am just amazed what is pulled from that DVX. Kudos-ten fold to Reel-Stream.....

I saw that too, It like if the red and blue CCD wasn't align properly, or I dont know. It is very anoying to look at. I wonder people didnt comment more on the XL H1 about this 'problem'

Look at the 4cam-1080cams.mov, you see there again the blue/red color.

As for the HVX200 there is also some blue on the edge, but compare to the xlh1 doesn't catch my eye as much, the red from the xlh1 caught my eye at first look.

I can't wait I get my cam ;)

From Page 11:

When comparing the samples below, The H1 appears to exhibit the least amount of common CA/"light purple or blue fringing", while the Panny appears to have it the worst.
It appears Panasonic underspec'd and overhyped this camera. It still looks like a really great tool, but worst lens in its class? I mean, come on. :undecided

If it turns out the len is questionable, they should of listed it at 7K and gave us a lens that can cut HD.

Although from what little I've been seeing, it looks good

It is a sensitive issue given that there need to be more tests.
Some catch the red more so than the blue, pretty interesting.
Here are the areas I pinpointed between the H1 and HVX.
I guess I was looking more for the blue than the red.

Jacob, that's not CA though, I don't think. That's the same overexposed fringing we get on the DVX when using CineGamma. With the DVX early on people were seeing purple fringing on outdoors shots, and eventually it was traced to being overexposed shots due to cinegamma having no knee protection. The points you're pointing out are all due to extreme overexposure, and the HVX was on cine-like-D, again with no knee.

In true CA it isn't related to exposure, although it is usually more noticeable on high-contrast edges.

The HVX can exhibit a little CA at maximum telephoto, but I don't think that's what you're seeing here, I think that's just the cinegamma/no-knee/overexposure thing.

Here are some examples of the CA present in the HD100 lens:
http://www.repairevideo.net/imgrepaire/comparatifhdv/Mire07.jpg
http://www.repairevideo.net/imgrepaire/comparatifhdv/Capture06.jpg

The XL-H1 seems to be similar...it gets very significant, on these images it is over 2 pixels wide. I don't think it's a coincidence that it is the excheangable lens cameras that show this. Making high-resolution lenses with few elements and little CA is not easy when on a tight budget. If the chips where 35mm in size this wouldn't be such a problem.

It looks like it's blooming from overexposure. Bring the shot into proper exposure and then check for purple/green around edges.

I'd say that's good news. Another honest assessment from Barry Green, the voice of reason.

Thanks again, Barry!
