Discussion of dv.com results

I just saw the res strip video. OMG! The H1 is a truly a mini f900. You know Canon had Sony's f900 in the crosshairs of it's Cannons....

However, when all is said, the HVX has a very pleasing film like image, and a lot of bang for the buck, as well the future of tapeless production today.....

This kind of microscope analysis is great for us technical DP/Director types, but once the film is made no one ever notices these differences. When backed 8 feet away from a big 60" HDTV, it will all look the same to the viewer.

My verdict is all the cameras rock. They all just offer a slightly different colors on the palette to paint with. There is no wrong choice, just a different one..

I just hope all you people wondering about these cameras have some seriously good stories for me to get wrapped up in.

Otherwise, your footage won't mean crap to me or anyone else.

At less I will have the best looking crap arround with my HVX200 ;)

Better than the most unwatchable crap...

I have no friends so I will probably be shooting the outdoor, hope it does that well ;)

They didn't do anything! They didn't adjust gain, they didn't adjust knee compression, they didn't adjust corring, they didn't adjust the blacks, they didn't utilize either noise reduction setting, they didn't use either of the cine gamma settings. And I haven't even touched on the more complex color options.....

They did BUPKIS!

LMFAO!!!!

LOL wtf? I thought they did "What they could" during this test?

So the results they got were from an OUT OF THE BOX XLH1?

I totally missed that.

But you know what? Pappas and Wabbit are correct; It's just a choice of what you can afford or what you want.

We can afford to drop 30k on two Canon XLH1's + Kona Cards for SDI capturing and other accessories if need be. So if the Canon really is the best choice, then so be it. That's IF it's the best choice for us and our workflow, y'know?

I have seen these functions in action. I have been studying the manual since Nov 2005. If they had used those settings, it improves the XLH1. H1 out of the box is like a f900 out of the box, if you have ever seen a stock F900, it doesn't do justice to what a fully tweaked F900 can look like. Same goes for the H1.

I was talking with another shooter today. He is ordering the HVX. He also has a BetaCam and the Sony HDV. He has rented the VariCam and sees a place for all formats. There is no one magic answer.

Wabbit,

I agree when it comes to all the crap espoused, mostly I think by youngins.

But certain realities are important and codecs utilized is one of them. I'm sure Canon made a brilliant camera, but if you can't capture the footage outside of a studio in anything other than HDV, it's a no go for me. And I would want to test this 24F for myself, although I'm happy to defer to Barry.

Why should that let the dust settle?

By "dust settle", I mean let's give time to see what's really going on.

There are still more tests that need doing, and real-world testing to be done. It is tempting to let one opinion or set of tests (for or against whatever camera we are looking into) send us running in whatever direction. Adam repeatedly said that more needs a-doing--for the Canon, Sony, and the Panasonic, it seems.

There is time yet. I don't think we have the whole picture still.

Oh, that I agree with completely. I thought you meant it was all clear and, hell, I'm just more confused than ever...

:)

Kholi,

There's something else too. It's what do you like better, you know? Hudson and I are pals, I love the guy. But the looks we each shoot for are VERY different. I don't like zombie movies, he loves em. I don't care much for grain, he can't get enough of it. Is one of us wrong? Hell no! We just have different preferences. Testing is great, but you should get a visceral response too.

Let's not forget that the HVX does variable frame rates, which neither the Sony or Canon do.

Yes indeed. The HVX was certainly designed for the independent filmmaker. There is no question about that. I just wish I actually like the physical aspects of the camera...

Yeah, that's another point.

I'm not too thrilled about the grain stuff, so I'm in the same boat as you. Even if I shot a zombie movie (which I will be doing), it won't be grainy. I want a clear image.

What I won't be shooting is a documentary. Maybe a mockumentary, but that falls into what you've said. It's about what you like basically.

Matt = cool

? :(

Sorry my dear fellow but is it a déjà vu? For non-speaking french ones: «already seen» post? LINK

It's not a big deal but please regarding same ideas we accept anyone (and your work as XL-1 or HVX -- why not? :undecided -- supporter is known and so much appreciated by us, well, I speak for myself...), however, not with a copy -> past of your own words. I know that's your «copyright»...but it's not so respectful to your readers. :) In fact, why not trying, as you said, «a different one»?

Take care and following your previous efforts, as well, your helpful website  and talent , thanks in advance! :engel017:

I feel your pain, Matt.

However, . . . My girl just got home. Rar raaar! I'm going to unsettle some dust. See you guys! :engel017:

test are TEST !! charts , measurements, resolution etc .. BUT in the end it's what YOU like on the screen/monitor ... the results just tell us ALL the camera's are allot of bang for our $$$$ ... try them out and/or look at the images they produce , you're going to like one over the other and it may not be the one that tested at the top ( cinealta) ? look at the workflows of each camera .. one might be right for project A and not right for project B ?? they'll all go to film and look good ( with good crew) ... the BEST camera is the camera that suits your needs/wants/workflow/look/budget
