GH4 Discussion : GH4, "is this the best camera ever?"

The issue with grabbing stills from video is motion blur. I dont shoot stills with a shutter speed of 50th of a second.

I haven't received my gh4 yet but as a C100 owner it will be interesting to see which camera get more use in my day to day! Yesterday for example, I had to shoot a quick talking heads setup outside, I didn't have much time between torrential rain showers, thankfully this is where the C100 excels - no setup time. Just pop it on the tripod connect the radio mics and record. Hit a switch to add ND filters on as the sun came out for 10 minutes. So easy. Remembering back to my DSLR days a year ago that scenario that wasn't just as easy. Yes the GH4 knocks the C100 out of the water on specs, but I feel it'll still be my go to camera for shooting the type of work I do. I also get clients commenting "that's some piece of equipment" when they see the C100 - I'm not sure they'll say the same with the Gh4 when I pull it out.

With the Gh4 I'm am looking forward to the amazing 4k image, and reframing 4k on 1080p timeline to cut with my C100 footage. I'm looking forward to up to 1080 96fps slomo - come on Canon - wake up!! I'm looking forward to using the Gh4 on a steadycam - something the C100 I feel is just too heavy (I'm a back pain sufferer). I shoot some bts at conferences and the Gh4 will be light and agile...

On the other hand I could be selling a C100 in the coming months! Interesting times ahead as you said!!
 
I love mine so far. There will always be better down the road, but GH4 is the only camera that I would want right now. Honestly, if you offered me any other camera to work with to fit into my current setup and workflow, I'd choose the GH4. Small and portable, flexible, great quality. Checks all the boxes for me.
 
The stills should be amazing once we have RAW support. If it's at the level of the GH7 I'll be extremely happy.

Best hybrid camera ever? Yes... this month.
 
Honestly this is how I feel about my GH3. Sure it doesn't have 4k but the 1080p it produces is equal to that of the GH4 (minus down converted 4k of course). Ergonomics and features are mostly the same. It is missing 96fps and the 200mbit mode both of which I would likely never use. Same with the HDMI output. I have external HDMI recorders now that I never use because the workflow is a pain.

Funny how we never considered the GH3 the best camera ever.

I didn't buy the Gh3 because it lacked features I really wanted. Focus peaking being one of the biggest. It is a great camera (I have used a friend's a few times) and it does a lot of things well,but nothing it did really put it way above other dslrs. I think the video out of it is the best 1080p in image quality. Definitely another step up from the hacked GH2 (especially in the colors) and far better than the Canon's (though I haven't messed with any of their raw footage). It was an all around solid camera and I would certainly listen to the argument that it was the best when it came out, but the gh4 has a landmark feature. It is the first DSLR for under 4 grand to do 4k , that puts it on the map. Add in the focus peaking, zebras, (both tools I love and missed not having on my gh2 on a lot) less rolling shutter in 1080p, the 96fps slow-mo, (which I think, contrary to popular belief, looks great, even if a tad soft) the beautiful 60fps 1080p, and better evf and LCD and in my opinion it took the solid GH3 and made clear separation from all other current dslrs.

It's awesome to hear that you're happy with GH3! It bodes well for the future. I'm sure that's how I'll probably feel about the GH5 compared to my GH4.

But my GH2 always had "focus peaking"... Just look for the aliasing on the LCD ;)

and md for the record, the Canon 1Dc DSLR did internal 4k first (albeit in a somewhat less efficient codec for just a few several thousand dollars more)

The 1080p option isn't what people care about with the GH4. I'm not a huge fan of the GH3, but the GH4, whether it's being used for 1080p or 4K delivery is on another level. Once you've used oversampled footage for 1080p projects it's pretty hard to go back.

Seriously though, I recently replaced one of my GH2's with a G6, and the peaking is so freaking useful that I get annoyed using the GH2 now (despite being extremely similar cameras). I wish the GH3 had this!

Personally, I really don't care about 4k. The new sensor with more DR, optional XLR inputs and in-body peaking are what make this camera attractive versus the GH3 in my opinion. If I pick one up, I fully intend to throw a speedbooster on it and stick with APS-C sized full-sensor 1080P.
 
This was my first personal project with my new Panasonic GH4 camera. Lenses used were the Panasonic 14-45mm, 45-175mm and Olympus 60mm macro. I am happy with the way the GH4 performed. Shot standard and cine-v profile at ISO 800 and 1600.

Hmmm...I follow DPRev closely, and can find no controlled stills test images for the GH4 in the D4s comparison widget or otherwise. Wrong site?
