Discharging li-ion batteries techniques

I know that Li-ion batteries are less prone to memory effect like nicads but I was wondering if anyone knows how to discharge the Li-ion batteries.
1. Apart from disabling the power save mode and opening the LCD, what is best technique using the DVX?
and/or
2. Does anyone know of a 240-volt charger/discharger for the batteries?
Thanks

Re: Discharging li-ion batteries techniques

There is absolutely no reason why Li-Ion bats would need discharging. It only shortens overall battery life.

Re: Discharging li-ion batteries techniques

I do it by forgetting to turn the camera off when putting it away.

D'oh!

Re: Discharging li-ion batteries techniques

Interestingly, Panasonic's manual suggests storing Li-Ion batteries only when fully discharged. I thought that was pretty strange myself.

Re: Discharging li-ion batteries techniques

Cams usually automatically shut down after a couple of minutes if they accidently are left on. In addition, a voltage treshold circuit garantees that a battery never gets "fully discharged" by a cam.

Re: Discharging li-ion batteries techniques

The DVX manual states that even when off, the camera will draw power from an attached battery and may fully discharge it to the point of it not being able to be charged again.

Don't know how much of that is CYA, but it's good to note.

Re: Discharging li-ion batteries techniques

All "normal" Li-Ion batteries have a built in over-current, temperature, overdischarge, etc. protection circuits. Overcurrent, over temperature protection are absolutely required for safety. There is no UL stamp without it. Overdischarge protection is an optional, not safety related feature. Overdischarged cells loose their effective capacity. Probably that circuit is not present in the pack for the reasons of cost and size, that is where the warning is coming from.
It is industry standard to store Li-Ion batteries at about 40-50% charge state. It is strange that Panasonic calls for full discharge for storage.

Was driving me crazy when it shut down after 5 minutes or whatever it was, so I switched to the other setting.

Anyway, battery was totally drained.

No problem charging it up again, though.

Re: Discharging li-ion batteries techniques

one thing I don't get is that the manual says to remove the battery every time the camera is not in use but also says to store the battery only when fully discharged. Does this mean i need to discharge the battery fully everytime i'm not going to use it just so I can remove it cus the camera is not in use. that sounds ridiculous to me. What do you guys do?
