Disaster Recovery test

I performed a disaster recovery test with footage from the HVX yesterday with positive results - Just wanted to report about it here (and ask a question).

I put footage on one drive in the media files directory - i created a project and timeline on that drive. Then i copied the project to another drive and shut off the original drive. When I opened the project the timeline had all media offline (obviously). I closed avid - copied the same footage onto the second drive and restarted avid - when i opened the project the media was online. GREAT result.

However, this begs a question - how does avid match up the footage - is it by filename. If so is there precedence of drives. If a file exists on 2 media drives then which one takes precedence - is it the one on the project drive?

Avid matches media based on several things. Tape name, timecode, and I think others as well.

I believe that it chooses which media based on resolution. It keeps the resolution of the clips on your timeline unless you tell Avid to link to highest resolution footage (or lowest rez depending on how you're working). If you have two copies of the media at the same resolution then ... I don't know. Last used maybe?

HVX footage does not have a tapename - nor can you set it because there is not tape name field to reset - this has been confirmed and is an issue with offlining in SD for an HD timeline.

The filename matching can be an issue because the HVX recycles the filenames - So how does avid know which file it is matching? - maybe an avid moderator can help

Maybe. Sorry about that. I don't have any experience with HVX stuff. Just thought I'd try to help.

Avid doesn't like duplicates. If it spots one, it flags an error and proposes to quarantine the file.

I know for a fact that I have duplicate file names in different numbered directories under mxf - they were never flagged
