Disappointed after first test shoot w/ DVX100B

Hello All!

I have just logged and captured this afternoons test footage with my new DVX, and I am disappointed. :( I understand that this is totally user error as I've seen some INCREDIBLE footage from this affordable monolith of a camera.

The problem is, going back through my footage it looks, please excuse the proceeding term, "liney". By this I mean I can almost decipher the lines creating the whole image. I shot 24p both with squeeze and letterbox.

Any advice would be sincerely appreciated, I'd really like to get some quality images out of this thing like you cats do.

Thanks for your time!

Hi there:)

Don't feel blue, you'll get there soon!

In-camera you should adjust the settings a little bit.

Use scene file f5 or f6.

Detail level: -4
Master Ped: around -6 or -8

Some other tips:

I don't know how it is for other people, but I always use manual focusing. So if you have it on.. turn that stuff off!

And start zooming! :P

Hehe, zooming in gives of a shallow DOF look, which is really nice.

And then be sure to mind the rule of thirds (in your composition):

Good luck!!

EDIT:
I also know that NTSC users have to shoot 24pn (n for native).

How are you viewing it?

How are you capturing it (what NLE)?

This sounds like you removed the pulldown wrong and are seeing interlacing artifacts.

Yes. If you shot 24p standard and are viewing it in FCP, you're seeing interlacing.

For best-quality 24p, you want to edit AS 24p, so shoot 24pA (which is especially important with FCP). If you do that, you won't see those lines.

If you're using a consumer-level NLE (like Premiere Elements or Final Cut Express or Vegas Movie Studio, or iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, etc.), then editing as 24p isn't available; you'll have no ability to remove pulldown, so you'll always see the interlace lines. In that case, you have to edit as 29.97 (60i) instead of 24p. (So, you actually DON'T want 24pA then.)

Also go full manuel on everything. The whole reason that I bought the dvx is that it let's you have full control over the final image, so play around with the can and on vertical detail go thin.

Hello All!

Thanks for the great responses!

I'm using FCP with this disappointing footage ( I used manual everything on F5 testing both letterbox and squeeze).

So, just so I am clear I just need to shoot 24pa?

And also when I log and capture do I import it as NTSC 48?

I need all the advice you can muster! Ha!

Thank you all!

The F6 scene file is set to 24pA at default, yes. As for what you need to do to capture, check the sticky on digitizing 24p footage in the FCP section.

Dude you really needa just spend the time messing around with the cam. I have been messing around with mine for 2 years now, and can now finally shoot stuff that I am content with.

get the dvxbook by Barry Green while ur at it. Also go into the dvx technical section and look on the scene file settings sticky they have there.

Tommetass gave u decent settings to start u off. mess with thhem and see what u come up with but keep the vertical detail THIN when ur shooting 24p/2pa mode.
