GH13 Disable AF Tracking? Most of you like it; I hate it!

Is there a way I can disable the AF Tracking while recording video completely?

I am planning to use "M" mode on the dial with the AF mode being "Area" (The smallest box) to shoot mountain biking.

I want to be able to set the focus and press record without having to worry about it refocusing on me mid-shot.

I know I can simply press the AF/AE Lock button before each shot, but that's not something I don't want to forget to do while shooting mountain biking.

Thank you.

You just set the AF dial on your left to MF, then it can only focus by turning your focus on your lens

Or go into the movie mode then turn off "Continuous AF" that way the only way to engage autofocus is either by a half shutter press or by touch screen and the lens ring will not engage focus if you accidentally knock it

Thanks Dazza,

So I just turned the focus dial on the left side of the top of the camera from "AFC" to "AFS". This didn't do anything. I still have my focus changing while recording. I then changed the "Focus Priority" setting to On and Off. Neither did that work.

How do I "turn off Continuous AF" you speak of?

The focus dial to "MF".

There are 3 options on that dial "AFC" and "AFS" do the same thing when shooting video.

The Continuous AF is in the second page in the "motion picture" section after you press the "menu/set" button

I don't want Manual Focus.

I want to be able to set the focus using autofocus, hit record and not have it adjust mid shot.

I'm not seeing the "Continuous AF" menu in my motion picture section. The second page only has digital zoom and wind cut. :(

Thanks so far Dazza!

I take it you have a GH1. I have a GH2

I'm not sure whether or not you can switch it off on a GH1, did they add it to another firmware update? Can any GH1 owners chime in?

You could always press the AE/AF lock then switch the focus dial to MF to stop it from changing any further

you set focus with the shutter button, then switch to manual focus to lock it then hit record. ive been doing this for donkey years.

Unfortunately, unless I am mistaken, there is no way to do what you're trying to do on the GH1. It is one of the stupidest things about that camera. Probably the best option is to switch the dial from AF to MF as someone suggested, but that's not a very good option.

Glad to hear they've fixed that very mystifying design decision on the GH2, anyway.
