Dirty Heads

I'm getting banding in my DVX 100b, I thought the heads were supposed to self cleaning. Are these pics a sign of dirty heads? Should I (lightly) use a cleaning tape?

No. It looks like the problem is with how you shot it and how you captured it. Perhaps it's a field dominance issue? Could be wrong though.

I shot this in 24pa 48 shutter, not sure what I did in the scene file though. OIS is off. It does it about every 5th frame.

You have to have chosen "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal" when capturing to capture 24pa correctly.

another issue could be and I had to figure this out through weeks of messing around. under one of the menus, forgot which one, but cs3 automatically separates the upper and lower fields just uncheck it and you'll be fine.

The footage was likely shot in 60i mode but that is hard if not impossible to determine just from the picture. IT IS NOT DIRTY HEADS NO QUESTION!!! AND NO- NO CAMERA CLEANS ITSELF OR THE TAPE PATH!

When you shoot in 60i mode then try to take one frame as you have done here for a picture, if there are is ANY any movement at in the frame, this is what you will see. Also, if you play 60i pack on a PC, you will see this as well.

When you record in 30P mode, the camera actully converts the output to 60i fields--it's right in the manual. What would be more informative is to state how you were viewing the material you were shooting.

Hope that helps...
