Dirty "cylander head"?

Sorry for the dumb question. I just got my DVX100a a few months ago, and only recently started giving it a good workout. It's quite a jump up from the simply consumer Sony Handycam I was using before. I'm feeling a little like my dad must've felt when he was struggling with how to program his VCR. (hehehe)

Today I was shooting some green screen footage, and then went to capture it into my NLE (Avid), along with some B-roll I'd shot last Thursday.

Much to my horror, both the Thursday B-roll and the green screen stuff I shot today first came in with black horizontal bars throughout. At first I thought it was a problem with my Avid (and there may be an issue there, too -- yet to be resolved to my satisfaction). But the bad news is, these horizontal bars were showing up in the LCD screen when the tape was playing back through my cammie.

I shot a very short test clip to demonstrate what these horizontal bars look like. You can see it at http://www.thebrownestate.com/wtf.htm -- this clip is about 5mb, just a short clip of my dog (goofy, I just shot anything handy to demonstrate what was happening).

At first I thought I might have inadvertently bumped a setting on the camera into progressive mode, which up to this point I haven't used at all (too much too soon for my little pea brain). Instead, I've kept things really simple so far, only shooting in standard 30i.

But then tonight, I've been going thru the User's Guide again (yes, I already read it once) and was shooting anything in the room just to see if I could replicate the problem. The little red "X" started blinking in the upper left-hand corner of the LCD screen. I see in the User's Guide that this is an indication that the "cylander head" is dirty.

So, I have to ask the dumbest question of all.......is the "cylander head" THE head? In other words, if I were to clean the camera's head (or use a head cleaning cassette), is the cylander head the one that gets cleaned?

Honestly, I'm not as dumb as this must sound. I've been a pro audio guy for 35 years, so I'm quite familiar with the importance of clean heads. But considering that I've only filled up one full cassette since buying this camera three months ago and captured the footage into my NLE using the camera as a deck (therefore, there's been some back-and-forth scrubbing on the head), isn't it a little soon for the head to become dirty?

Or is it?

Yes.. its your heads, and should be solved with a good cleaning. It's happened to me only once when shooting in a room with a fog machine last year, but im pretty on top of head cleaning so I dont see it normally.

Jarred - what exactly do you do to stay on top of head cleaning ? Is it just using the cleaning cassette after a set number of hours , or do you 'wash' them with alcohol ? - As yet my heads haven't been serviced ( 58 hours on meter ) and I'm wondering how I should go about it. - I've only ever cleaned VHS before. Thanks! Paul.

Re: Dirty "cylander head"?

I was shooting last week and that cylinder head error popped up on me. I've only got about 8 hours logged on the camera so I was surprised. I powered down and powered back on and the problem was gone.
