Hi:

This has come up frequently over the past few years. Are you shooting film? If so, these can be quite handy. Cavision makes okay stuff, not the best but okay.

If you are shooting video, you will look like a complete asshat using one of these. Don't go there. That's what video monitors were invented for.

Best,

Dan

Thanks for that Dan.
I am glad I asked.I will be shooting on HVX.
The reason I wanted to get on of those things is that I have only 9 days to shoot and before the shooting begins I wanted make sure that all the shots are covered ahead of time not to waste any time on the set.
Thanks again.
Good day.

I own one. I like to frame my shots ahead of time. Helps me visualize. You should get one if you think it will help in your creative process.

Or, you could just make two "L's" with your thumbs and index fingers and frame your shots that way.

Both sides are accurate. Strange? That's the way it (the life) is! :)

Oh boy, doing the "director fingers" is even a more egregious offense of pomposity than a director's finder. It's in the union contract, your crew has to stone you to death if you do that ;-)

msbryan, why use a director's finder over just grabbing the camera? If you use the camera, even with just the flip out LCD, then your DP, gaffer and talent can see what you want at the same time you frame the shot. With a finder, you have to hand it around like a spliff and everyone will have a slightly different viewpoint because rarely will all of you stand in the EXACT same spot that you framed the shot in.

The only thing worse would be for you to have a monocle OR a megaphone. Its the video age!

Best,

Dan

I use to carry cheap dv camera, set it at 16:9 and shoot reference planes for my "on the field shooting board" and (some times) I cut it in premiere in order to show what I want, to my crew.

Monocle?! Megaphone?! Brilliant! I've never even thought of that.

And I can get both for only $100 total!

Dan, you are assuming a lot. He may be renting.

I say use whatever you need to enhances your creative process. I'll show up with my viewfinder, monacle, megaphone and "asshat" if it means a better end result.

Besides, the chicks will dig it.

Oh, you're going to need to grow a beard too. Everybody knows all good directors have beards.

Thanks guys good info.
Since I already have a beard I have to get the other stuff.
And a hat.
Good day.

not just any hat though - you have to get an asshat. A pipe might look nice with all of this too. At least it worked for Sherlock Holmes...

Now we're gettin' serious

Now we're gettin' serious

Okay guys, you pushed me to this...

To REALLY be taken seriously as a fauxteur with your video camera and director's finder, say that you graduated from NYU Film School and that you interned on Rush Hour under Brett Ratner.

I actually had a guy tell me this once when he wanted me to hire him as a gaffer. Now that was an asshat. ;-)

And Brett, I have interviewed him, even though his films make ridiculous amounts of money, he is a total asshat, he canceled twice with no notice and full crew and setup because he was "too busy at the moment". And the term "fauxteur" was coined in his honor.
