Good Cheap Headphones (?)

I know it's not ideal but I work with headphones a lot.

My current pair seemed to have stopped working after I threw them against the wall in a childish rage.

So, I need new ones. Looking for something under 100bucks. Hopefully around 60bucks...

Anyone have a suggestion? Most of the phones in this price range come in serious packaging and so you can't test them out in the store (tried today), so suggestions would be great.

Thanks guys,

rook

the link won't work...but they're called Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones

these are good, i've had mine for about 4 years.

Flat frequency response, so they're good for sound editing if you do that sort of thing with headphones.

They're pretty comfortable, I can go for 6 hours before they start to hurt the ears.

$75 at B&H

Well I use a pair of Sony MDR-V300s and they cost about $80 CDN. They're DJ headphones and although they don't advertise that they're noise-canceling they still cut quite a bit of noise out. They have terrific sound and I use them with my iPod and for monitoring sound with my DVX. Hope this helps!

I'd say go with the sennheiser HD280 or Sony 7506 they are both pretty standard and right on line with your price max.

The wooden versions probably sound like angels singing in your ears....

They look awesome....

they look expensive.

I've used the HD280 for a couple years now with great results... for monitoring sound on set and for working with sound in post (until I could afford speakers).

The wooden ones are works of art. However you can get the SR-60's for under $100. You should definitely check out the reviews. I can't tell you how many friends have tried mine and then bought a pair the same day.

I highly recommend the Grado SR-60's: http://www.gradolabs.com/frameset_main.htm

They look old school, but they sound awesome.

I second this wholeheartedly. I got a pair of sr-60's about five years ago, and I have trouble listening to music on anything else. I've had to do some simple wire repairs lately, but otherwise it's one of the best purchases I've ever made.

Caveat... the person next to you can hear everything you're listening to with the grados. If that's an issue, try www.headphone.com for some good alternatives (they have pretty no-nonsense reviews - and they carry the grados just in case).

While my sr-60's are waiting for me to get off my lazy butt and fix them, I'm currently using my sony mdr-7506's. They'll last almost forever, and their sound is respected. But I'd look at mid-range sennheiser's before I bought the sonys for basic listening, because they're a little pricey in comparison (~$110 - I bought them for audio work).

But, get grado, mdr-7506, or whatever headphone.com recommends, and you'll be doing good.

Oh, and both sound great even without a secondary headphone amp, which is important to me.
