Wondered what the best setup would be for a video monitor on an HXV not attached to the camera. I'm usually running a camera and want to also see what my other cameraman is recording. Anything better than long video cable from the camera?
I'm sure that is out of my budget range. Are there any cheaper systems, something like those home security systems? I really just want to make sure the shot is framed like I want and that they are recording. We use the Firestore FS-100 and those occasionally drop the connection to the camera.
This is digital - it's basically lossless 1080p and barely a frame's latency. Maybe a bit OTT for just a Director's monitor, but suddenly we're into live cameras with anything that has HDMI out.
...or if you want something easy and cheap, get an HDMI splitter (if you need two monitors) from Amazon (passive $5, active $12 - the passives are finicky about what's plugged in where but need no batteries), and HDMI cable or two... (or whatever flava the HVX has). You can use a computer monitor with HDMI, an HDTV, or visit lcd4video.com and get one of their cheaper monitor kits.
I recently shot a TV spot using "muppet" style puppets - we had cables and monitors everywhere so the puppeteers could see their moves. Ended up with a 5" Marshall, a 17" computer monitor and a 22" HDTV with a wall mount adapter to a light stand. All worked fine.
I've had my (film school) son run b-camera once and used the 22" monitor so I could monitor his shots - just took an HDMI cable and a DIY stand adapter.
