Director/DP of Breaking Bonaduce on VH1

We're hooked on the show at my house. The planning of camera placement during the doctor's office scenes is impressive. I probably would have just shot with two cameras, but it looks like you crammed three or four in there. I'm sure your editor(s) loved the options that provided. Good work. I'm taking notes. . .

Hey Mark,

I'll be honest. I'm not really into reality shows. But I have friends that are.

The way you guys shot and edited BB was enough for me to watch the episodes. :) I dig the craftsmanship you and your crew did to produce what it did. Nice stuff.

What do you guys edit in? I noticed you said you had to put it through a DaVinci. Did you shoot in squeeze mode, then convert and add the matte later?

Keep up the good work.

congrats!

glad a pro out there is using the DVX and praising it as well...

I look forward to seeing the show.

fwiw: (from someone who shoots more film than dv)... the footage is beautiful ESP. for a friggin' reality show. your inserts give you bigger production value as well. nice.........
& that's veiwing it compressed &... i'll have to catch the show sometime. as i gear up to shoot my 1st indie... i'm going to make sure we grade all footage on something like the da vinci. good call & thx for sharing.

I always thought Danny was an intense fellow, someone Id like to hand with heh. Good choice and well done the success of your show, I hope the shows success propells you higher also.

I forgot to mention.... Danny Bonaduce make a cameo in my doc... I was up at his station shooting the same day Gene Simmons was there... must have just barely missed you guys!

Great work, looks to be at the top of the reality show game. Love the look and love the shots...keep up the good work.

Hey and if you are in SOCAL in the next few months I would love for you to come speak to our class at UCLA. I am taking a Digital Cinema class and would love for you share some of your techniques with my fellow classmates and the teacher. Let me know if you are interested and I will put you in touch with the teacher and see if we can set this up. Many of us have the DVX 100A / B and we would love to hear your experiences. Also our teacher is very cool and used to shoot on Ally McBeal and Star Trek. He is very laid back and would most likely be open to the idea.

Thanks again,

I tend to despise celebreality shows (and reality shows in general) but I actually found this one to be quite well done. It's nice to see someone trying to look at serious subject matter and the generally sophisticated camera work and editing helped it feel more like a real drama. Good job.

On page 32 of DV magazine the Breaking Bonaduce article, there is a picture of a DVX100A on a Jib Arm but if you look closely it looks like there is a "brick" size battery on the back end of the camera. The battery looks much larger than the ones most of us are used to using. Anyone know what battery this is and what attachments was used to mount it to the camera?

I remember reading in the article that they used batteries to distribute the weight on the jib, so maybe that is why the battery is there. Not sure though. It would be cool to have a pack like that with a DVX, though.:)
