Direct to disk via Blackmagic

How big will be difference in quality if I will capture all my internal shoots over 1080i component out to Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme as uncompressed HD, instead of recording to P2? My raid read\write almost 200Mbps. So, was just wandering if it's better to record to hard PC directly at full resolution or got over DVCPRO HD. Teoretecly should be better, but I had no time to try it.

Any one done it?

I wouldn't think very much...

I wouldn't think very much...

I can't see you getting any improvement at all frankly. I think if you want to see an improvement by using an uncompressed HD straight to drive workflow you would need a camera that will send that uncompressed signal to the outputs (component, SDI, whatever) first. And to my knowledge, the component out of the HVX 200 isn't getting a better quality uncompressed HD that the P2 cards are not. Now were it to have like a 4:4:4 dual stream SDI option, well then yes, hard wiring out of the outputs at uncompressed HD would see a difference. But what only the Thompson Valley Viper Cam does that?

cheers.

cheers.

I thought that the component output is sending out a signal before the compression, whereas the p2 card is recording after the compression is added?

Hmm...

Hmm...

This would probably be a good one for perhaps Jan to answer. I didn't think the HVX was built like that in its component output. I would investigate further, but can currently not have access to the camera (something to do with our shoot). I just can't see that being the case though. In today's day and age, and the current market, if they were going to offer an uncompressed stream I can't see it being offered any other way than SDI, or something proprietary. Anyway...

cheers.

10 bit uncompressed?

10 bit uncompressed?

So there is no point of capturing as 10bit uncompressed, since component out is only 8bit? Any advantages of capturing as 10bit?

10 bit...

10 bit...

As you can't invent information the camera isn't giving you, no there isn't much of an advantage to going 10 bit. Not unless some other aspect of your workflow would make doing so advantageous. I'm still not sold on the component out being uncompressed HD, as there was no reference to literature from Panasonic stating such.

cheers.

Full-resolution, uncompressed video captured via Multibridge

Full-resolution, uncompressed video captured via Multibridge

I got it on Blackmagic site:

"If you want to preserve the maximum video quality of your HDV camera, then you will need to capture the live video from the HD component analog output port. While the analog connection will introduce some analog noise, it will output your video in an uncompressed format and at full resolution. If you then digitize that video, it will result in a much higher quality video capture compared with HDV via Firewire."

Apples and Oranges...

Apples and Oranges...

HDV and DVCPro HD is apples and oranges just so you know.... None the less though, thanks for the posting and the reference. More information never hurts. HDV component out though I would have assumed would be better regardless, as to prevent writing in MPEG-2.

The posting before though that linked to a thread here in the forum goes through the HVX 200 issue quite well. If I can get our camera back I'll certainly be interested to do some P2 vs Component tests with the HVX 200 to see if the analog noise become such an issue that the P2 ends up being a superior look even if it is compressed. Certainly won't bother with that for this shoot, but would interested to know if we ever go w/ the HVX as a principle camera.

cheers.
