direct menu not working if media near end

I had shot some footage with my EX1 today with only one SXS card (as it was a private project only for testing). I used the direct menu to change gain to +18db. At this time there where 10 minutes free. When there have only been 4 minutes available, the media near end message was displayed and I was no longer able to change my gain back to 0db as I couldn't enter direct menu while the message was displayed. It was necessary to delete one clip to have more than 5 minutes available to enter direct menu again. Does anyone know a workaround for this ?

Without pulling out my camera, can you enter the normal full menu and make any changes in there?

I too find it annoying that all on screen info dissapears when those media capacity warning messages come up, I think the same thing happens for the 'will switch slots soon' message appears.
 
Well I have to verify it again as I may have missed something as I was in hurry, but if I remember well in the full menu you can only set gain presets for the gain switch, not the gain value itself. It wasn't an issue here as it was only test footage but I find it a bit wired not to be able to use direct menu while this message is displayed.
