Direct Harddisk recording

I was told by my supplymanager that I can do direct capture to a stand alone harddisk without P2 cars, via for example the firefire port on the HVX-200. I cant figure out how, any tips?

Don't think you can do that. I think you have to either capture with a laptop (running FCP) or capture to P2 then dump to the hard drive.

no no. as far as i know you cant record onto drive while you are recording to the P2 cards. But once u want to dump the cards, u can do so over fire wire, however the HDD has to be formaztted for the HVX. so dont try using an already used disk.

This is what ive read on the forum before. Im hoping my info is correct, because id like to get annother black iomega 400gig disk to use for the camera.

You are correct about the transfer from the P2 to the HDD over firewire, but there is one thing you miss. You are limited to 15 total transfers to the same drive. This means that the largest hard drive you could use with a 4gb card would be 60gb, and the largest for an 8gb card would be a 120gb drive.

Cam-Ra : what do you mean by : 15 total transfers to the same drive. How come it dosent goes with your freespace left ?

It's the way the camera has to format the HDD. There is pretty much a P2 Store built into the camera minus the HDD. 4GB times 15 dumps equals 60GB. Multiply that by two for 8GB and you get 120GB.

Basically, it creates a new, separate partition each time you dump a card. And there is apparently a 15 partition limitation associated with hard drives (I'm not sure why, exactly, but it is certainly true). So that limits you to 15 offloads, regardless of how much space you're using.

And don't forget that it makes a separate partition when dumping a P2 card, even if the card isn't full. So if you only use 1gb of space on a P2 and then dump it, you still lose one of your 15 offloads. So try to fill them totally up before dumping in order to maximize usable space on your drive.
