Direct Comaprison: F3 vs Red Scarlet.... Check it out....

I like the f3's "Feel" more.

But you cant deny the RED's crispness. I look at it like this. If i were shooting a film about victorian england, i'd shoot on Fuji Eterna 400. But if i had to shoot digital, i;d shoot Alexa, and if i couldnt have an alexa, id shoot on F3. Ifi had to shoot a victorian period piece on RED, i'd probably have to use lenses from the 1950's to reduce the hyper sharpness...... it would just look weird. Unless it was like, the new Sherlock film or something where guy ritchie makes Sherlock do muythai kick boxing.

IF i were shooting a VFX heavy scifi film like Promethius, i would want the sharpest, most hyper stylized image i could get. And i think the Epic was the perfect choice for that.

Cooke lenses also contribute their share!

Anyway, thank you so much for doing this test, Timur. Was something we all needed to see. Glad you did. Your input is invaluable.

Same feeling- F3 is more creamy and looks more natural and film like. F3 sensor is great. Sony should reduce price and F3 would be everywhere.

Hey Timur, two questions for ya.

What are your thoughts of filtration (promists, classic softs, etc) of the RED in order to perhaps combat some of the hyper-sharpness you get?

Would it be possible to get an R3D snapshot of the skin tones and dynamic range shots to play around with from ya?

Nice comparison. I wish the Sony F3 was as popular of a name with producers and directors as Red is. Many times I have to fight with producers to let me use my F3 over my 5D.

Really?

Wow, just goes to show you how perception can be skewed by popularity.

I woud choose the F3 every time if those were my 2 choices.

Scarlet sure is sharp. Like the look of the F3 in this scene - however it probably lends itself better to those shots.

Also in Color you can pretty much create the reversal look in the fx room if you ever wanted to.

Just use F3 not telling anyone and let them complement your work :) They will love F3 look :)

Thanks for sharing your test. I think that the F3 did very well and the Scarlet only does better if you really needed the 4k resolution.
One question. At 2:38 was the noise added in post?

Doug im assuming you mean the part with the film grain?

Yes it was added in RCX.

I will post some screen shots from the D/R test. I shot the skintone test a long ways back, and i think i may have erased the R3D's.

I'll reshoot new ones if i cant find it.

So after a discussion on REDuser, im going to reshoot the Skin tone test, and try a "better" workflow that someone suggested. See if i cant get something better out of the RED.

Interested in your findings. I was hesitant to say anything as I don't have another comparable level camera on hand to test myself, but I find I'm getting really pleasing skin tones out of Scarlet, way better with Redcolor 3. I was expecting Scarlet to hold up a little better then it seemed to in this test. That said, every time I see F3 footage I do find it quite pleasing.

well, epic and scarlet are the same image. so just image the same footage just bigger.
